Trying to Properly Get Involved...

Hi all!

I have been posting on the Boomboxery Facebook Group for a while now... Registered for the forum some time ago but am just now finally getting around to posting. I have not really even had a chance to lurk around the forums yet, but will be doing so. Admittedly I am terrible at forums... I tend to get involved for a while and then fizzle away when life gets busy. I'll give this my best effort, though, as I am hungry for more info and connections in regards to collecting boxes as I am just getting started.

I am a child of the 80's, so I had my share of boxes throughout the late 80's and early 90's. I am heavily involved in Hip Hop and graffiti culture so the boombox has a special place in my heart, though I had not given much thought to collecting old boxes until I was gifted one by a friend late last year. Now, of course, I want more!

The box that was gifted to me was a 1982 Panasonic RX-5050. It was pretty beat-up but fully functioning, though the tape deck ran a bit slow. By chance, early this year, I found one of the same model for sale on Craigslist locally and picked it up for a good price. It was in very good shape. I cleaned both boxes thoroughly, did some parts swapping and made one RX-5050 that is now at about 9/10 in condition. The other was still fully functioning and was about a 6/10 cosmetically. I sold it to a friend. The 9 is my only box right now and I am in love with it...

Naturally I am interested in adding to my collection, so I am here to learn about best practices, good places to find old radios, and network with good people (already met a few really nice folks via the FB group).

Looking forward to interacting with everyone!

Jim

Welcome aboard! And I like the courtesy sign with the boombox at the end. Hadn't seen one of those in years! :-D

Welcome! They still have those signs on the New York subway...I took a picture of one last time I was there much to the embarrassment of the mrs :)

Nice panny...can't seem to go far wrong if a box has Panasonic on the front :)

Ha! Yes yes, the decal is from the NYC MTA official. I have a friend who works for the MTA and he sends me goodies every now and again to feed my NYC Subway obsession, which of course goes along with my involvement in graffiti writing. This decal is a fun crossover. :-D

Here's the one I took a photo of last year on a crowded subway whilst my wife pretended not to know me :)

Welcome aboard. Sadly, here in the UK, public transport signs tend not to be that interesting:

Enjoy the forum, travel by taxi if you ever come to Britain! ;-)

:hi:
You'll love it here. No one here ever made me cry. They certainly have made me laugh, though.
Beosystem, subways around here don't have penalties like that for eye contact. Eye contact could cost someone a lot more than 200 Pounds.
...And it's not collected by the authorities.

Right, Mr. Fuzz? Lol! And, see... I told you I'm bad at forums... I have not been back on for a bit. Lol!
Got that new box coming, though! The collection is finally starting to slowly grow! So, I'll have some new photos to share soon...

Welcome! You might want to search through the Collections forum to get an idea of what types of boxes are out there!

As usual, not doing a great job of being a member of a forum community. I do follow the Boomboxery FB group pretty closely because I seem to be on FB all the time. I know it's not the same... Lol!

Back in June I added this lovely JVC 575 to my collection - officially making it a collection of TWO different models. Lol! I did end up selling my second 5050 to a friend who is enjoying the **** out of it!

I have recently acquired a JVC M70 that I am unbelievably excited about! It should be arriving early next week. I'll post photos when I get her all cleaned up!

Cheers!

That "no boomboxes" logo would make a great t-shirt.
Isn't it great? I love that it's still on NYC Subway trains to this day - when most people are plugged in to their MP3 players anyway. Maybe I'll recreate it in Illustrator and put up a PDF for everyone to grab at some point...
