Hi all!
I have been posting on the Boomboxery Facebook Group for a while now... Registered for the forum some time ago but am just now finally getting around to posting. I have not really even had a chance to lurk around the forums yet, but will be doing so. Admittedly I am terrible at forums... I tend to get involved for a while and then fizzle away when life gets busy. I'll give this my best effort, though, as I am hungry for more info and connections in regards to collecting boxes as I am just getting started.
I am a child of the 80's, so I had my share of boxes throughout the late 80's and early 90's. I am heavily involved in Hip Hop and graffiti culture so the boombox has a special place in my heart, though I had not given much thought to collecting old boxes until I was gifted one by a friend late last year. Now, of course, I want more!
The box that was gifted to me was a 1982 Panasonic RX-5050. It was pretty beat-up but fully functioning, though the tape deck ran a bit slow. By chance, early this year, I found one of the same model for sale on Craigslist locally and picked it up for a good price. It was in very good shape. I cleaned both boxes thoroughly, did some parts swapping and made one RX-5050 that is now at about 9/10 in condition. The other was still fully functioning and was about a 6/10 cosmetically. I sold it to a friend. The 9 is my only box right now and I am in love with it...
Naturally I am interested in adding to my collection, so I am here to learn about best practices, good places to find old radios, and network with good people (already met a few really nice folks via the FB group).
Looking forward to interacting with everyone!
Jim
