Its strange that johnny you would think because it's loud the kids would love it, i love the walkman but sometimes i realy wish it hadd'nt been invented because then we may of had some decent boxes still being made not that im after anymore boxes, i think i have my fair share but i would'nt turn down another m90 if one came by .
Very salient point Rimmer. Though I have a certain fondness for the walkman,it was a definite game changer when prices dropped enough for people to get a good perceived value for their money (Indeed,It's the early ones that were prohibitively expensive and very well built that are the most collectible today). However,if people hadn't the alternative of portable in your ear stereo sound devices,I think the boombox would not have waned in popularity as it did.
Walkmans eventually got to be fairly inexpensive.Even though these portables hastened the decline of the boombox, unlike the blaster their big sound was only in your head and didn't disturb others around you.The boombox is a different phenomenon all together. It was meant to be loud,in your face, and make a definite impression on those around you, whether it was appreciated or not.Unfortunately, this kind of brazenness lost favor mainly because of laws and local sound ordinances.Even so had people not had an "in your ear" alternative,I feel they would have persisted with their blasters. As the boombox Museums history page commented on the Declining Era,"How the mighty have fallen".
