Awesome. Love of boxes for the sake of boxes. I am also in a similar mindset but for me the sound comes first so I have to control the obsession simply due to lack of space and time. I like listening to a box for a month on tape and line in and then I cannot afford to cycle them all in a year if I have more than 10.It's not the resale value I'm interested in and the sound quality is certainly not a factor. I have some terrible sounding boxes in my collection admittedly but I love them. See my Candle JTR-1249
I display most of my rotation (boxes I use daily) boxes on shelving and an incomplete 300 would look odd next to my complete PC-55 and PC-550. I get these boxes are rare but I'd rather hang on to my $$ for now and hope a more complete model shows up. Minor cosmetic and mechanical issues I can tackle but finding a red handle for that would be difficult.
Those who know me on this form, know I'm not in this game for resale....I collect them because I love them.
Different topic but what I’m also fascinated in is the drive to collect. I have found from this and other forums that some prefer 3-piecers (not me because they are bigger and a hybrid between a mini hifi and a single-piece, but obviously they should have a superior sound with isolated speakers) , some hate slider controls; some care only for tape sound and others would install a BT. Some like the 6 battery size. But the biggest driver of desire is whether a box is upgraded vs original; the completeness factor like a missing antenna or handle or knob is another one. These topics would make a great research paper… personally, I was surprised to see recently that one missing knob can halve the price of a m90. These are just things I’ve observed but there are many more things including the rarety factor. I am wondering if the m90 supply was tripled and prices halved, would people still want it? Or the Sanyo 820 -I was obsessed about it for a week but then realised it’s because it is rare and expensive (one seller recently wanted to trade it for an m90 + $1500). Also I wonder if the next generations will value these machines as high. I have not seen any collectors in their 30s yet.
Anyway, enough rambling, but this hobby is super fascinating.
