Got this Realistic SCR-8 a month ago, cheap as hell, shipped to me from Wisconsin.. Cassette was broken pretty bad, but radio and aux in work great and so do the LEDS! I maybe played it for 5 minutes before stripping it down..
When I pulled it out of the packaging, sand was leaking out of the boombox.. So, I took it out to the shop and took the casing apart..
Hard to tell from the pic, but ALOT of gravel & sand was inside the unit.. more than a handful! Almost 2 handfuls!
I was thinking of taking it apart to clean it, but figured now was the time to start customizing!
I had this vision in my head when I first seen it for sale, so it was do or die time!
Got a 9"x20" piece of 22gauge sheetmetal, and had to "trim the fat" off certain areas to make it fit perfectly..
Had these Alpine speakers sitting around that I got at the salvage yard for a couple bucks, and they fit perfect! Same bolt pattern and same ohms as well! The silver coating rubbed off when I wiped the dust off, so I took a cleaner to remove the rest, exposing the black woofer cone..
I grafted the sheetmetal to the face, shaving the cassette player, stock tweeter locations, microphones, tape buttons, and also shortened the tuner window 1-1/2" in length.. Sprayed a bedliner spray on the backside for a lil sound deadening as well..
Did some filler/sanding/ and primer work on it..
I know it lost alot of "character" when I got rid of all the molding and body lines, but I need a smooth surface for all the crazy designs I'm about to do on it!
Basecoated silver
A couple days ago I sprayed 2 coats of silver mini-flake and 2 coats of Silver medium flake, buried with 3 coats of clear!
This is just Step 1 of the paint job, many different patterns and layers coming next...
