Hey mate, great score on the RC550 and glad its arrived. I have a 550 parts box here in the loft so may be able to help out. I was actually waiting for some parts to try and complete this one and get it back together but im sick of having loads of non working boxes around so we may be able to work something out.

I can't say definitively but im pretty sure i have the handle, tuner trim etc. Might be worth making a list of what you need and i will see what i can help with. Drop me a pm bud.

I thought I was dreaming, when I just awoke to this! THANK YOU MUCH! I will PM you later tonight when I get back home. I'll take a look to see if I could use anything else as well, but nothing comes to mind at the immediate moment.

I was cleaning off the speaker grilles, and noted staining and lint on the bass/mid speakers. I saw a thread about acrylic paint which I will try. Does anyone have a recommendation on type of paint and/or color to match the 550? Just paint the acrylic on with a brush, right? Should I, and approx. how much, should I dilute the paint down with water?

I will go to home depot tonight and take a look at what they have.

I saw the other member who recently painted a VZ2000 cones red and it looked SICK! I may want to attempt that in the future, but for now, want to keep it with its original aesthetic.

Today is a good day! Thanks.

I did a general clean, and put the box back together. Speakers sound good on FM radio....actually really good.

I put a tape in, and I initially got this LOUD feedback noise (like microphone feedback) when the volume was 25% or higher. Dioxit to the pots/switch/slider fixed that. When I play cassette I get a good amount of hiss from the tweeter and less so to the mid-speaker. It almost sounds like the tweeter could be blown, but it's not since it sounds great on radio. I cleaned the capstan / head / and pinch roller and not a significant improvement. The radio plays at 75% louder at max volume, compared to when I'm playing a cassette. Also, the LED's don't work on tape only.

Any ideas on what could be causing these issues?

I ordered a demagnitizer. Crazy that I don't have one when the manufacturer recommends use every 8 hours of playback. I use a boombox with tape daily, and never found the need for one. Maybe it will do some magic to my other boxes as well!?

I'll also try a more thorough cleaning of the tape heads/capstain.

I would also try cycling the Record Bar by pressing playing record a few times and then stop,

Thank You. The record button won't press down at all, obviously I'm pressing play and record simultaneously. I'll have to see if I can figure that out next time I open her up.

I did give the roller and head a more thorough cleaning and it sounded much better when the volume slider is in certain positions. Other times it sounds muffled. I need to hit that volume slider with deoxit next time it is opened. I tried to spray from the top, and not sure if I'm getting the deoxit where it should be applied.

Same thing with the radio band selector. Maybe I need to get inside and apply the deoxit. I'll try that and demagnetize the head and see what happens.

Check the cassette you were using the record tabs on the top of the tape might need to be taped over.

Or the record prevention interlock bar is jammed? Often does on older machines esp when record function goes unused! This should be an easy fix!

Thanks JVC Floyd and Nickeccles! Record doesn't work with blank cassette and will look at interlock bar to see if that is the cause. Not familiar with this bar, but will do some research.

See some photos of her. I cleaned her up. I have strap coming from Blu-Fuz to fix the mixing handle. I'm on cloud 9. I love this box. I feel like a little kid!

I replaced a belt and got the cassette working perfect (except Record of coarse). I hope demag will clear up the cloudiness in the sound...but it not I can live with it if necessary....until I find the fix in the future. Bass does sound pretty damn nice. I like this Mono box for sure. Sound is great...especially on the radio. She GETS LOUD without distortion as well.

The last photo shows "moldy" plastic around the sliders. Not sure if there is a way to recondition this? I couldn't find anything on the forum, but maybe I wasn't using good keywords. I have some plastic on the top/side that looks a little moldy as well...but the area around the sliders really bugs me. Obviously some impefections on the box...but it is perfect...for ME!
