Last weekend while out to dinner with my father in law he tells me " there is a surprise coming for you but I can't tell you what it is.
So I'm like ok, very curious.
My wheels are turning at this point.
Rewind about a year and a half ago I met an older couple, Friends of my in laws over at their house.
We got into the conversation of hobbies and of course we discussed my odd hobby of collecting vintage boomboxes. And so the conversation ensued and out comes out the iPhone pics and all.
So the husband tells me that he has one in his basement back home and says he thinks its a Sharp. He also says its a pretty big one!!
Also tells me if he digs it out that he will send it to me.
Well this was the only surprise I could think of that this can possibly be. Maybe? Can it be?
Well my father in law calls me yesterday and tells me "your surprise showed up today"
So I show up at the house and there is a boombox sized box on the floor in front of the door. Very heavy box, so at this point the old ticker is thumping out of my chest.
Can it be? Did I guess right?
YES INDEED!!!
I inboxed it and low and behold a one owner Sharp GF 9595
A little rough and dusty as heck but put three double a batteries in plugged it in and fired it right up.
Well surprise surprise , I got it home that night and did a quick three hour clean up on it and viola. Spanking clean.
Just need to sand and polish the tuner dial, replace one antenna and battery door foam and it will be in very nice shape!!
Very happy. View attachment 9289View attachment 9290View attachment 9291View attachment 9292View attachment 9293View attachment 9294View attachment 9295

One of my favorite boxes on looks alone. I do have the GE version of the 9797 though but still haven't been able to snag the 9595 yet. Why do you need an antenna? They look good in the photo?

Is it possible that I've never seen a 9595? I always thought a 9595 was like a 9494 or 9696...didn't realize it was a 9797 type. I love the 9797's looks. Think I like the 9595 more now. Very cool.

What a story...AND WHAT A RADIO!

That is Magnificent. It looks Brand Freakin' New!

You need to do a button and control count for Ricks other thread, that's a contender right there! Looks like you could dial the phone on the front!

I replaced them with temporarys.
They actually don't match. Will so for now but need at least one. Antennas are identical to the 4 speaker sharps.

Thank you all for the nice words. I consider myself lucky to have such great extended family looking out for me!
This Sunday past I got to show the original owner the fruits of my labor and he was amazed.
He said he was embarrassed sending it to me in the condition it was in and that he feared it would be something I wouldn't even want. The radio was sitting in his basement for the last 20+ years and at one point his wife was actually bugging him about throwing it away.
Thank goodness he didn't. I expressed to him how happy I was to have it and that I was glad he didn't toss it in the trash!! And he was very happy to see it go to a person who will take care of it for the years to come.
All is well that ends well.
He says he has a box of old cassettes he wants to send me when he gets back home and I told him to keep an eye out for me. Maybe he has other friends in the Bronx with old boomboxes stashed away in the basement.
