The RX-5500 is a cinder block with a handle!! Rock solid build quality and killer sound! I had one back in 2003, won it on ebay, but let it go 3 or 4 yrs later, sold it on ebay. Miss that boomer for sure.

wow your ex 5500 is even in a better condition than mine, and much cheaper ;)... i totally like mine, and those scratches make it look more oldschool *g..
i gotta clean it up from the inside and use lots of kontakt spray on the lewers .. any recomendation ? i read about "kontakt tuner 600" wich was very recommendby hifi dudes...
well my 5500 will get a high end paint job gonna makr the back and grip black or dark gray and the front in a subtle red...

seeya and this box rocks.. i listened jesterday to a 2 hours drum n bass show on the radio and the house was shaking *g

Hello I am a newb but admirer of all boomboxes,
so may I ask all of you with such vast experience:
Woud this unit, the 5500, have more clarity than say a jvc m70 ?
How about a sharp GF 9x9x series of that time or the Sanyo m99xx models,
or what about the Aiwa TPR 9xx?

I don't know about the M70, but it will trash any Sharp in terms of clarity.

I would say it has the same clarity as an Aiwa TPR-950, or even more......But the Aiwa has warmer bass and a nice Wide setting.

hiho well the clarity is really awesome of the 5500.. it lacks bass but thats no problem for me sounds a bit like a old hifi system.. the sound when tuning in radio is really good and i like it much more than some stupid audioengine speakers i had first

Hey I now have a Pany5500 with original box!
Of course I had to put it thru it's paces, and compare with my JVCs..
Problem is I feel I may be biased or lacking in ability to convey sound charcteristics,
Soooo... I enlist the help of a professional with golden ears,
Someone we can all agree upon has superior abilities.
Unfortunately, he was being very polite in not wanting to put any of thm down.
He was being coy and non confrontational, even avoiding the issue,
Until I had to bribe him for an answer.
Here he is already done evaluating..

Contact cleaner is availible in many brands - any electronics and many automotive shops should have it, just buy what's is easy to find. You want to use it to clean all the controls and switches - spray it into the controls and switches and work them back and forth. Clean the tape heads and pinch roller with rubbing alcohol and Q-tips. Replacing belts is a good idea, the old ones are likely stretched.

Dont' spray any sort of solvent into the tape mechanism unless you know what you're doing. You'll remove grease from areas which are supposed to be greased, and generally screw up the operation of the tape deck.

As for phono adapters, I have no specific experience with this model.
