Hi all,
I recently unearthed some of my old CD collection and was wanting some opinions on the perfect boombox to play them!

Here's where I'm starting:
1) I really dislike the black plastic / egg aesthetic, and prefer classic 80s boombox good looks.
2) BUT sound quality should reign supreme, so I'll consider anything. I'm not really familiar with that timeframe's boxes so it might be all I have to choose from lol.

Any ideas of what models I should start investigating?
Thanks-

Also the sony that's the cf d 5 I believe . that's the original sony cd boombox. Looks way more 80s but can be quite rare .

Definitely got the look! There are some in the market that I can see, but the CD players are usually broken. Makes sense I guess for an early version?

If you like the Sony CF-D5, you'll love the CFD-W888. It's like the D5 except on steroids. It weighs a ton and solidly built, regardless of the black look. There's going to be someone here who'll opine that only the FH series is worth getting (even though they've never owned one of these), but the FH's are AC only unless you have the battery pack option (ultra rare) and it doesn't have the same power when on battery. Also, keep in mind that when you have an all-in-one CD player, you can't have 2000 watts per channel... it'll be impossible to keep the CD player from skipping. It's rated at 8wpc and some will say "only" but again, that's already M90 power. Anyone who's listened to a quality high efficiency home sytem at 1wpc will tell you that it's plenty when your speakers are efficient and these APM speakers are very efficient. Take it from someone who's had a CD-F5, fortunate enough to have one of these CFD-W888s (I'll never sell it) and a whole slew of Sony FH's. The only negative is good luck on finding one of these. They are ultra rare and you'll find 20 service manuals for sale before you see one of these. It's saying something on the rarity when the service manual is more common than the device itself.

Whoa, thanks for the great write-up! I'll check it out :)

Philips D 8854 and Grundig 3100 CD are two classic unit that sound great and can be found at low price
If you're after a unique look, go for the Sanyo MCD 950F, a monster boombox with double CD and a fantastic sound.
My recommendations: Sanyo PH-WCD3, elegant and with a lot of features. Pioneer CK-W700, with a detacheable CD player.
