Americans like big & huge, in everything they buy........ That's really the 777's appeal.........I really don't think people are buying it because it's loud, or good-sounding...

I can tell you that 777 is also unquestionably boombox #1 for Russians :-P (I am one of them BTW). And, in Russia, the prevailing opinion is that it is one of the best sounding one piece boomboxes. BTW, Russians absolutely do not get Conions. On one Russian web site I saw a page that translates and comments on the well known futuristic boombox renditions on pocketcalculatorshow.com. This page has the following comment on the rendition of Conion C100 (my translation): "And of course, Conion C100 - African people favorite - will be absolutely reincarnated in a new image." Such dismissive attitude might be caused by the fact that Conions were never sold in Russia, people know very little about them and the attitudes were shaped up based solely on the looks. I do not appreciate their use of "African people" in that context (unfortunately racists exist everywhere or, perhaps, they just in-artfully tried to refer to the fact that African people tend to favor bright colors).
But how many 777's were actually sold in Russia in the 80's? Would have been black market, if anything.

I think the only reason Russians like them is because Russians lusted over anything Americans had :-P

It was not considered American. It was Japanese (and it really was). The notion of American electronics did not exist in USSR (and it looks like it hardly existed in USA either starting from 80s :-) ). Imports in general were rare in USSR and electronics was extremely rare but it was sold in a few special stores. When people went to work abroad (sailors, diplomats, some construction projects in developing countries etc.) they were paid in special currency that they could then use in these stores. I do not know how many such stores existed, but my guess would be - fewer than 100 for entire country. There were also shops that sold used stuff and some people who traveled abroad would bring used (or even new) gear to such shops. In any case, import electronics was prohibitively expensive and rare. The lust was strong

The 777 was for sale in Russia and all Eastern block back in the 80s  It is very common all round the world i think. Every non boomer connected will know this one. Probably that's the reason for such iconic status. But indeed - great boomer whit not ordinary look and good , loud sound.
About 808 sound - passive radiators toshibas are handling those more than good

Apparently someone doesn't know what "opinion" means here. :nonono: This is what starts arguements here. Like I stated before, to me they are ugly....lets just leave it at that. I don't care how wonderful they may sound. The thread starts out as :good, bad, and ugly.....and I agree with the last description.

I'm not a big fan of the 777's looks.......I mean, tt looks OK I guess, but only because the 4 speakers grab attention and make people notice.......But it doesn't have enough flash to it......It needs more chrome or something......

But the GF-1000 that hemiguy recently fixed up is a whole different story......OMG........White speakers and blue grills.......OMG.....

I like my GF-777 very much! I honestly don't understand why people are hating on the Sharp. It's good-looking, loud, good bass, clean overall sound, nice double cassette deck and many features. I agree with Bendycat: 9/10.

Also wouldn't say the M90 is the best sounding one. It's just really loud with decent sound quality. But I agree with Reli, that it really depends on what you want to do with it. For indoors get one with deep bass and good sound quality (for example Telefunken Hifi Studio, Pioneer SK909). If you want something to carry around a lot get a loud but not too heavy boombox (for example JVC M70). If you want to rock the block get a big one like the JVC M90, Conion C100, Lasonic TRC975 or Sharp GF-777.

:agree: all the way!
Perfectly summed up, Zippy!

Hello

I also got a 777 in my collection (a new one, original) and this is what I think about:

The good:
... the way it looks. Very big unit with a wall of speakers. I love it ...

The bad:
... the sound. For me as a collector of the best sounding units it was very disappointing. For this big unit such a small sound, subwoofers without a effect (where's the bass?), almost no stage, ... mhhh, I expected more than that.

The ugly:
... nothing. Mybe the price if your looking for a good example?

Best wishes
TOM

I second that. My 777 is my number 1 boombox to me, with Sanyo 650 being second. And then m90 and bigben. In case anybody was curious

The BigBen looked serious & CHEESY at the same time. I can't tell if that woofer placement, firing down & in the middle, would be boomy & plastic or actually create a deeper sound-stage....Any 1 ever demo 1 of these in good condition?

Yea I just recently got a "BigBen" (Japanese version with the controls all written in Japanese) It's in very decent shape. Very clean sound and the bass isn't bad at all. I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks the M90 isn't all that. I gave mine away in a trade (remote an all). big fan of the Conion C-100f that I own 2 and I'm in talks with someone who wants to unload a gold version.

Back to the subject at hand: the 777 is still a hot piece. I'd love a 1000 just based for its looks too. I think they're all the same when it comes to power through. Can't handle good real bass (808 bass) but still a great conversation piece and a welcomed part of my collection.

i have to say,i was playing my GF999 today and it sounded pretty poor, the original speakers are a crock of dung..its partly why i dont play it much,i play my Super Jumbo more or my DT680 because they sounds nice..but i wanted a 999 for years so just looking at it is enough to keep me loving it..

Well, the 4 woofer design & fully separate AMPS to drive them is appealing, even @ 8 watts RMS per channel. Too bad they used B.S. paper-cone tech. back in the early eighties. I want to try laoding a solid mid-bass driver @ 4-ohms.

Boomboxes were built with America's cultural tastes in mind. We were the biggest market for them. Not Europe or Asia.
