I am finally getting around to doing a battery disconnect switch on my GPO radio. While I have the thing apart, it was an opportunity to put in some speaker guards. (More for aesthetics and bling) I have two style "handles" that are the right height. Not sure which to go with. What do yoo'se say (said in my best New York tone)? One handle is round and the other is square. Neither match the plating of the tape deck protector. The new handles have a much nicer chrome finish.

Very cool idea! I personally prefer the round one since it matches the tape guard. I wonder if you could also glue some chrome dustcaps on the woofers.

I do have chrome dust caps somewhere. Actually, I did buy some a couple years ago for my other projects. Forgot to add that to this radio's list!

Round it is/was! While in there, I wanted to add a mini bat switch to kill the battery from draining. I know some of you guys put the switch inside the battery compartment. I wanted something easier to get to so I put it next to the power button. I removed the grilles and painted the tweeter openings so now it looks like a larger speaker and takes away the cheap look. Thanks to Reli, I almost forgot to put in chrome dust caps that I had sitting in my parts bin. That alone was an amazing improvement. Since the box is opened up, I ordered some Dynamat to line the speaker walls. This is a decent quality radio for what it is. The speakers are quite heavy with large magnets and the space is ported to the rear. When the case is closed, the speakers are within their own enclosures. The two front silver non functioning buttons lead to small contacts on the circuit board. That must be for the European DAB option. They glued the plastic chrome buttons on the case shut and left the actual switch soldered to the board. That said, they used some grinding tool to cut the electrical path on the pc board. My next feat will be to see about making a larger battery pack since there's space in the compartment. I am hoping to get more than 4 hours of use. I did try to experiment with LED tape light for the dial but it really didn't look the way I was hoping it would. The Dynamat should arrive tomorrow. (Love Amazon!) If you guys have any other improvement suggestions, let me know! I'm going to bed. It's almost 11 and the house went dark. I have automated lighting!

Yeah, my wife walked in the garage last night wondering where I was. Of course, she gets my personality of never leaving good enough alone! The GPO has been sitting on the garage display shelf and I have been wanting to get to it. With the D8443 on the bench for almost a year and waiting for the last parts for it, I broke down and decided to get the GPO done at the same time. it is a decent attempt at a retro radio, but you can see where they cut costs. At least now, it looks the part a little better.

Looks way better dude now she is finished, i would consider getting one but i don't like rechargeable anything lol, great job my man
agree with you on the rechargeable thing. I want to see about making a larger pack so it plays longer. Sucky thing is that you are confined to their battery system. At the very least I should be able to leave it plugged into mains and shut off the battery from getting charged.

I was never a big fan of these GPO's but if they came modded like yours, I would have bought one right away!

Nice job MesaAZGuy!!
Well, in today’s world of “designed here but made in...” you almost always have to modify something. I knew getting this unit I had to take it apart. Honestly it’s a decent radio for today’s market. I can see them not wanting to pay the extra China man to hand brush the black paint or glue on chrome dust covers. That and even perhaps adding three more battery cells for an hour more of play. That said, it’s a great unit for the money.

Finished up this bad boy today. The dampening mat arrived today from Amazon. Ordered it last night. Stuff like this I just can't find locally and here it comes to me with the click of a button! So I installed the mat and closed up the box. I don't know if it made a difference other than adding another 3 lbs weight! Either way, glad to have this project done.

They sound "Ok". Sound is subjective. I would prefer more bass and a lower HZ on that. I've heard worse and I have heard better. That said, I wouldn't hesitate to get one knowing you might have to dabble with it to complete the "proper" look they "should" have done in the first place. This radio modified or not, is definitely a looker for sure and will get attention. I bought it mostly for aesthetics but overall happy with the sound for the price paid. When people see my collection, it is the first they notice due to the chrome and prominence of its size on the shelf.

The parts where you added Kilmat didn't have any vents, right?
No vents. The only venting is the tubular oval shaped portion on the bottom. I do notice at low volumes it does have more bass. The hollow sounds some people reported and thought was the unit case is most likely just the lackluster speaker/amp.

Your dampening is very complete....impressive......but looks like it might need to be smoothed with a roller? It looks like the material was corrugated by the factory, because they wanted you to flatten it for better performance?
