Ok. I certainly will give that a try.

Can anyone point me in the right direction of where i can locate it? I've checked the service manual but i couldn't find it.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hummmm.... That do not have. But you should be able to find it (them) it/they would be the only ones with a heat-sink.

I hope that some one cones along with some pics (or a schematic), but it should be with the heat-sink.

Later!

Hi All

Well i'm back and i wish it was with better news. I wish in some ways i left the box well alone when i got it working first time.

Basically, i have completely re-belted the tape deck and record player, got new sliders, and replaced the front case with one in better condition. This all took a few attempts as i made various mistakes in reassembly, including not realising the bases of the old sliders were still stuck in the sliders controls, and having to dismantle the box again and use a hot pin to get the old bits out.

However, i finally thought tonight that i had finished the restoration, but when i switched it on, i was greeted with an interference type noise coming out of the speakers. It reminds me of when i was a kid and i would fall asleep in front of the TV and be woken by the noise which occured when the station would close down for the night. It's not that loud, but it is very annoying, and makes the box as good as unusable to me. I have cracked it open yet again and followed the speaker wires and checked the connectors, but i can't see anything wrong. I am at a total loss, and am worried that i now have an issue that i cannot fix as electronics and i aren't the best of friends.

If anyone has any suggestions for what i can do to fix this i would be most grateful. Otherwise, this VZ is going into hibernation until such a time that i can find/afford to get a professional to sort it out.

Cheers

Jeremy
Have you tried to run on batteries, possibly something going in power supply or switch:hmmm: make sure if this has dual voltage that selected correctly too ;-)

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately, i have tried a few things without success, so i will be putting the VZ out to pasture sadly. There's definitely some sort of problem in the amp chip region, which i did eventually locate. It is however beyond my skill to fix electronic issues such as these.

Regardless, i have greatly enjoyed discovering this site and have been inspired by the generosity and good spirit of many on here. Now that i know my limitations, i will just look for cheap, mint condition, classic boomboxes for sale!!!!!!

Thanks again to all who helped out.

Cheers

Yeah, i am considering this option. I've been looking around to see if there's any place in Melbourne that might be able to help. I have certainly taken it as far as i can.
Very disappointing as i thought i had resurrected it with new belts, sliders and stylus.

I will make some calls tomorrow and see how i get on. If worse comes to the worse and i'm left with it as is i will be happy to donate it free of charge to a member of this site as i know in the right hands this will be a great machine.

Cheers

I can get my tech to check it out for you, I don't think it's the outputs but more likely a resistor or cap upstream.

Will PM my phone number to you.

Thanks for all the encouragement. My trials with the VZ have got me down this weekend, and that has reflected in my last couple of posts.
I am pleased to report that i now have renewed hope thanks to tshorba, and there might be a happy ending after all.
I can tell ya, if it wasn't for this site, i'd be at my wits end by now.

Thanks

Jeremy

Hi All

I thought i should just provide an update on my VZ restoration.

I have taken up tshorba's kind offer of assistance and dropped the VZ off for his tech guy to hopefully fix the sound issue. It was cool to meet someone from this site, and wow, what a great collection of classic box's. It was a true feast for the eyes!
It was tshorba who alerted me to the fact that my VZ is missing the original front screws for the tape deck. So, i thought i would post a topic to see if these screws were available anywhere, and Alfie came through with the goods yet again.
I gotta say, i am constantly struck by the kindness and generosity of members of this site. It really makes me want to help others out too.

So, thanks especially to Alfie and tshorba, my restoration project is still on course. I hope to post again soon with more info and pics.

Cheers

Great posts! I am also in Melbourne and have just started restoring a VZ that I was amazed to find in a tip shop in Tasmania. The stories of your restoration adventures so far have been really useful.

Good luck with the latest challenge!

Hi All

It has been a long wait, but i finally return with good news.

A couple of days ago i picked up the VZ from Matt (tshorba) following its stint in the repair shop. While by all accounts it was a real pain in the arse to fix, the results are truly magnificent. The noise that drove me crazy after i thought i had finished restoring her has completely disappeared. It's to the point where there is virtually no noise coming through the speakers when you crank her up to 10 (no music playing of course). And the tape player has also been fixed, so it's working beautifully now on all functions.

Matt's tech guy has done a great job. It's 1981 all over again in my house this weekend. It's linear tracking all the way!

All i have to do now is a bit of cosmetic work regarding replacing the sliders, the fancy screws for the tape deck cover, and buffing out some scratches on the front of the record player. Thanks to Alfie and Bredgeo, this will easy.

I'll hold off posting any 'finished' photos until i've completed the cosmetic issues, but until then, i thought i would post some photos showing what i got up to before sending it off for tech assistance last year.

But before i go, a big thanks to Matt for all his help. My VZ is back in action thanks to you. Cheers.
