Hey guys, finally after months of preparing for this and with a little help and advice from a service manual and Vintage Man(Billy), I was able to open and service my very first boombox. My personal grail, the Sharp GF-9494X . I've been wanting to do this on my own for the longest, but I was afraid that I wasn't gonna be able to put it back together again  Anyway, I conquered and succeed  It was not a full restoration though, as I did not fix the cassette player. All I did was cleaned the inside guts and spray Deoxit to all the places that needs contact cleaning. My major purpose for the disassembly was to replace the old worn speakers (termite holes) with replacement ones from another 9494. I repainted the replacement ones with some Krylon white paint using the cap of the deoxit can to cover the chrome dust caps. Also, wash the front shell and repainted the grills satin black and here ya go........ :-P I think I did good, what do you guys think? I am very happy with the results and with the new installed woofers, it really sounds great!!! . Of course, pics for everyone to see :-D

Very nice!
Although, I still want to see someone paint the area outside the speakers.

Great job
The speakers with the chrome kaps looks fresh.
I have a H version with the black kaps and your X looks much better with those chrome caps.

Nice work, they are a very nice box to work on. It would be nice to get that deck working though :-) The decks are pretty straight forward to get going.

James.... :-)

Thanks guys. I will try to fix the deck one of these days I hope :-) Just seeing all those wires and connections makes me cringe :-D But hopefully soon. For now I'm happy with the results and enjoying the fruits of my labor.

I feel inspired. I have a 9494 as well (deck doesn't work either)....... Which kind of Deoxit did you use? I have no experience with the stuff and they have like 10 different kinds (sprays and what no)....

You can use any of the Deoxit spray can. The one I am using is the gold one. Hope this helps. Good luck on your restoration :-)

Just get your digital camera and take shots of the area you are working on, that way you can use the pics. as reference. Each piece tape it on a cardboard and label it or write on it so that way you know where it goes.

By the way the 9494 looks great.

Great work.

I've always liked the style of that box.

:agree: I do this with EVERY radio I take apart.

The 9494 is such a great looking radio. You did a great job and all that clean chrome and aluminum

One of these days I hope I can find one.

There is something about white speakers :hmmm: I LOVE'EM :-D

:agree: The 9494 has those clean lines and that very iconic look to it that's why it is sought after by bbox collectors :-)

I like that best with the black felt dust caps. It reminds me of thae creepy things that stare at you from up in the treetops at night:
