Hello again and here is my 5th and the greatest boombox so far - the GF-777!

20150924_183215.jpg

I bought it off ebay about a month ago. The seller actually lied about it's condition - "perfect in any way" - it was not. Packaging was quite good so several cracks must been there before. When I pluged it in there was no sound but power led light up. When I turned volume pot quickly several times I got sound from the radio on left channel, the right channel was dead and stayed dead. All pots got loud scratch sound. Treble/bass pot didn't work. Source button also didn't work, didn't matter what input I select still got only radio. Only thing that worked okay was weak green dial light! :)

Didn't think long, this is now my priority nr1, other projects can wait!

Took it apart, all parts were brownish and sticky including the case - really disgusting. I think it must have been in some bub or bar's kitchen for a long time. Gave it a good bath and a lot's of contact cleaner with tooth brush.

Finally it's clean enough for a plastic repairs. So now I repaired a screw post and couple of cracks on the bottom of the case.

I used a professional plastic glue for car bumper repair works (you can't buy it from store!) which is like liquid or gel like plastic. After 30 minutes you can drill holes or what ever you can with plastic - really good stuff!

And now 'testdrive' for the electronics, surprisingly there was sound and everything works again like it should! Really happy with results!

Great! There is no need to take the pots apart risking braking everything and messing up already messy wiring inside. Right channels is always out from the volume pot. While the frame is out of the case just spay pots with Deoxit fader through the front holes (I put some paper towels underneath to catch the excess fluid) and give it a couple of days to soak in. If you try them right away they'd still be scratchy. They'd be line new in 3-4 days and there are no extra damage risks involved. On the stuff that old you try to minimize your involvement as much as you can.
How are the cassette doors doing? They are problem #1 on those.

I wanted them perfectly clean, also added silicon grease for smooth turning feedback! :)

Cassette doors are perfect, like new.

Cassette doors are perfect, like new.

Do they close properly and hold the cassettes against the heads fine?
You must be the luckiest man in the world then, cause this is #1 problem with all GF-777/999 etc. series even if the box looks new!

They close properly and the inside frame move fine I think, but haven't tried cassette yet because I don't have any usable only cheap reel to reel eagles. They seem OK, I'll let you know and/or make a video! I hope I'm not wrong about the doors. :w00t:

Let us know when you'd try a cassette! I won't consider the restoration complete without trying everything first :-)

Oh it's far from complete! Actually I haven't used a cassette since the end of the 80s but I think I'm going to dig up my cassette briefcase! :-) More mods are coming.

EXCELLENT work

Thanks for posting up that info on the plastic repair. In the last 2 months I have bought 6 different "Plastic Repair" products of which NONE have worked. I know members are also using JB weld also.

The 777 was the 2nd radio I bought and she needs the full treatment. Thanks for the inspiration!

And there's a but coming... A friend gave me some cassettes.

Both decks play fine no problem at all (speed is okay but no treble, maybe bad recording from the mid 80s), but rewind and forward don't work, like there's not enough power and whining sound comes from the box. Without a cassette it works fine! Maybe slipping belt? So belt job? What do you think?

Do yourself a favor and take both doors out then insert the cassettes and try them. Something tells me that everything would be fine :-)
