So, finally a dream is realised. I recently took delivery of a Sanyo MX-920. In rough shape but still beautiful, i do love a challenge so this was right up my alley.
Here she is as she arrived at her former keepers:

And here she is after a teardown:

I have made quite a bit of progress on her since these were taken so i'll update the thread soon.
When she arrived there was power, radio played and line in played, when i next turned her on there was radio very feintly in the background even with volume at full, next time i turned her on there was nothing for about 15 minutes then gradually the radio came back. Now there is nothing at all. I'm thinking there must be a bad solder joint somewhere so thats next to tackle.
Rebelted the deck but no buttons produce anything, however, if i manually lift the heads the motor starts spinning and the tape spindle turns so the rebelting looks good just no life from any buttons. More investigation needed. Any thoughts if you have experience of this box please feel free to chime in.

Worse case scenario i can look at it, it's bloody beautiful! Big thanks to Rudey also, a proper gent to deal with as always, he ensured i went into this eyes wide open with no surprises, a stand up guy.

I wish you luck with this project, it's a good looking BB despite it's neglected state. The first image made me thing, though and I now understand why so many BB's have burn marks on their bases!

Sounds like the tuner isn't getting enough juice. It seams like every 2nd pic I see of a 920 has it sat on a stove top! Local member Jay had me do a restore of his 920. Just for giggles I checked the bottom panel - yep, huge burn mark from a stove top!

These are pretty easy to work with regards to getting access to everything.

Good luck with the restore.

James..... :-)

You may need to remove the cam to clean and lube it. I had the same problem with the 920 I recently revived. Make sure the cam starts at the "ready" position. If it's not there, you can manually rotate it until it stops, then try the transport buttons. If it plays but then cannot reset to "ready," lubrication is a likely suspect. Also, double-check that all your leaf switches are intact and properly engaging. Once everything moved freely, I found the deck to be very responsive and reliable. It's a super-nice deck once you get it going.

BTW: I'm glad to see you didn't part this out like I suggested in your original thread on this box.

Thanks Super, thats exactly the sort of tip i was looking for from experienced members. I will be spending a day on the deck tomorrow (took a holiday day from work just for boombox repairs, oh the dedication!) so will let you know how i get on.

Well some progress has been made, grills sprayed in BMW saphire metallic black, speakers painted, chrome strips rubbed down with decreasing grades of Micromesh to a shiny mirror like finish. Pics to follow.

However, I'm hoping some experts can weigh in.

The sound is still quiet and can only be heard with the volume to full. I found 2 dry joints on the amp board and got all excited as i thought this may cure it. It hasn't. However, I did find a capacitor that looks suspect. It's not bulging but it has a dent in the side. Looks like someone stuck a straw in it and sucked hard, kinda sunk in on itself. I'm guessing this could be the culprit. If anyone has any other pointers i should check then please shout.

OK since there is no other comments i'm going to go ahead and replace the caps with some Panasonic replacements and see how that goes.

Sorry no one seems to be interested in my poor lil Sanyo

Have you done the usual switch cleaning and record bar cleaning? Have you measured for voltage at the tuner and amp? Have you measured for voltage output from the power board?

Do you have a service manual handy for test voltages?

Hi Jimmy,

Yes i have done all of the usual suspects are far more besdies. I do have a volt meter but i am unsure about how to measure for voltage at the tuner and amp? and the output from power board thing. Exceedingly willing to learn tho!

Have you checked the blue 'ribbon' switches are moving properly? I've seen the flexible metal strips break causing a non switching issue.

It's weird how the tuner and amp worked initially but stopped shortly after.

Yeah those ribbon cables are weird. I did have look at them and they seemed fine but i will double check them again. Much appreciated Jimmy thanks.
