This is a very interesting comparison. The Sanyo is a box I've been really wanting to hear.I have the Prosonic. It's certainly an impressive box to display.Even so,I've never been impressed by its sound. My PRQ-9962 seems to have rather laid back highs for my tastes in music.I'm really more of a rock fan so that might explain my bias towards the upper frequencies. If a box has prominent mids in particular,it will just seem louder even if its not.The 9962 just isn't an "A" rating to my ears in that way.

Thinking the Prosonic had bad tweeter caps,I replaced them but it sounds the same.I'm thinking of going with caps having a different value to see if it helps.

...I guess I was lucky because my Prosonic has very detailed highs, especially on the wide setting, and hard kicking bass...the 920 has a richer sound to it. The 920's highs and mids have more detail, it handles the higher volumes with little to no distortion, and it is a heavier box. Mine benefitted from having new caps, pots and amps thanks to Superduper...if you get the chance I highly recommend getting one... :-D

My first 920 was recapped right from the start. It had a bunch of issues with it including dead FM, etc. etc. While it was apart, I gave it the works. So I never did hear it before giving it the refreshing. I only know what it sounded like after.

Then the second 920 (the one Melly got) came to me recently with very staticy sound which then went dead on one channel. At first I thought the static was from dirty controls but it soon became clear that it was a circuitry issue. I identified the issue as being in the amp board and proceeded to replace the amps (both, even though only 1 was dead). The static was attributed to the capacitors so those were replaced. The result is -- as Melly said, very very good. I am pretty sure that the bad caps lead to the amps failing. The capacitors couple the stages to prevent damaging DC from passing on the the next stage. When the caps fail and DC is passed from stage to stage, it could damage the amps and/or speakers.

So no, Melly did not hear a before and after 920 cap comparison. He did compare 2 similar sounding 920's to 2 similar sounding 9998's and it was pretty clear to both of us which model sounded better.

Needs caps is pretty clear because it will not sound very good. Sort of like a dying eversonic. :w00t:

But the question is when it's not yet that bad to be obvious and not a great sounding box, how will you know if it's bad caps, or just not a good sounding boombox?
