That's an E type circlip. No special tools required. Just place it up against the shaft and squeeze it on with a pair of pliers.
Ah, thanks! You must be a better man than I am. It requires a ridiculous amount of force to snap on. I tried it with the pliers but it just won't move. I'm just going to get a little tool for it now that I know its name. There's no such thing as too many tools. Too many boxes, sure, maybe..but not tools!

Didn't last you too long huh, well good on you!
I'm putting my 939 back together once I have that little e-clip tool so I can stare at the fancy leds all day and get nothing done. Meanwhile I've been ogling some more of the body work issues on mine. So the player keys have been dechromed and I'm keeping them that way for now, as the rest of the body is too weathered in its current state to warrant a nice proper fix. It must have been sitting in a damp cellar for many years, such a shame.. just look at the state of the, what I think, is aluminum face plates:
It doesn't clean up well, it looks like it oxidized deeply into the surface. Tried vinegar but it's not limescale. Tried metal polish with a toothbrush. Nothing. Even took a dremel to it with polishing compound. Nothing. So looks like it needs to be sanded but then the printing will be removed also, and this applies to all the aluminum faceplates.
All the plastic is in excellent condition though luckily, so even with these imperfections it still looks awesome.
