Exactly.
One factor we did not mention however is efficiency. (Better known as sensitivity.) A great example of this is my Sansui SP-5500X speakers (very sensitive) which at 1w can deliver 98dB SPL. Now that's efficient! But let's be realistic. To find that to work in a boombox...would be like finding the holy grail.

I got the same speakers, original owners for over 30 years. I also have the larger brother/sisters of that speakers and they are even more efficient 99db and over 100db SPL. I would never sell them no matter what. They make a small receiver sound like a really big one... but I digress.

Back to the Realistic. Perhaps what is really needed are super efficient 8 ohm speakers. Then you'll have the best of both worlds. The amp, happy at not being overdriven so minimized distortion but plenty of volume from driver efficiency.

ok i did the replacement wow there was a different sound first thing i did notice was better treble responce there is less booming in the bass volume , there is a good bass i was able to bring the volume up to the 5 to 6 with the loudness switch on without it 7 to 8 that were it starts distorting ,, so you do lose some volume but in reality the volume seem a lot better sound wise you are able to crank the volume up a bit i have it at halfway with all bass and loudness and sounds great ,, the 4 ohms tend to give it more boom to the bass but was not able to use the volume at a higher setting....

So Ramon, it sounds a little like what I envisioned.

Question: I understand that you would lose a bit on Total Volume. I guess my question is as it pertains to "usable" volume. In other words, forget about the volume control. No matter where the volume control is, how would you compare the sound and volume at the point just BEFORE where the sound begins to distort? Sound is better, I gather from your impressions, but is the actual "usable" volume lower too at the point before it distorts? Again, forget about where the volume control is. I'm only interested in the point "before" distortion.

norm the volume is alot better since you can crank it up aways like you said numbers are not important i mean before as soon as i cranked it up it was a lot of deep bass but could not bring the volume up beause it distorted real fast now i still have good bass but i am able to go higher in volume and louder without it cracking up real fast i mean the volume is useable now then before so i will keep the m70 speakers in there ,, the lasonic speakers are good it brings on some real deep bass but overall volume is suffering it will start to distort just before the half way mark , it clear that the overall volume got better with the m70 speakers,, i belive that the design of this box would have called better to use 8ohm speakers,, now remember i would not know what other box would be better with this setup :-) :-)

This reminds me of when I put those 8 ohm Marantz woofers in the M-90.
More usable volume for sure and the bass was better due to the foam surrounds.
I guess back when these were designed it was more about how loud it would go
vs how good it would sound.

well with the m70 speakers it sounds a lot better really still its louds now because i am able to drive it harder without it cracking up before time it seem as if its a better fit than the originals,, the lasonics sounded good but was too bassy not being able to bring the volume up before it started to distort ,, i was thinking that i was going to get less volume but in fact was able to get good treble and bass reponse all good all my box needs now is some good cleaning some paint for those grills and fix the deck

ok -- if the ultimate proof is in the performance --
instead of the math -

than ramon has done 100% fine !!!

i did hear his scr-8 with the m70 speakers today --

it was GREAT --

real strong base a very LOW volume --
more like an m90 than an m70 ????

seems impossible to me -
- that the identical speakers in an m70
have to be cranked LOUD to hear/feel ANY base

but on the scr-8 -- with a single and less powerful amp --
we got LOTS of low bass -- right from the first click

anybody wanna guess at WHY ???

please --- really curious
