Thanks for the confirmation old friend. Truth is, the 2198 I have was very nice before I made the changes, but sounded craptacular when pushed due to the cheesy speakers. Plus the gray plastic had turned into that nasty green, gray, yellow hue that time bestows on many a boomer. The cleanup, paint job and speaker mods do wonders to improve the box.

It is well worth it to take a stab at restoring one, even if you don't mod it. The one TRC has for sale, as I said before, will not blow the walls out of a room, but sounds very nice for what it is and if you want a project box it's a fine candidate and repairs are easy peasy if needed for the deck. :-D

I know what u mean now kind of like the Sansui CP-7 has a great solid sound bass is good not too heavy but good quality bass.

Whoaaaaa...the 2100 series are nice, but nowhere remotely close to the Sansui in quality or power. I say this so there are no unrealistic expectations. Keep in mind as well, that the 2198 version was the top of the line (based on what info I could find scouring around) at that time for Sears. (It has Dolby, music search, seperate phono and line in, etc.) But a Sansui it is not. Look at the speaker housing I took a picture of and it will tell you all you need to know.

Also keep in mind, we are talking about a department store brand manufactured by someone else. The Sansui was designed and built by a (at one time) manufacturer of serious home audio equipment. And it shows in the portables that carried their name at a time when it meant something.

I am not knocking the box TRC is selling, let's get that understood. Just want everyone to be clear as to what it is and not overstate it. It's a good box that has good sound and as he said will make a nice project box. :-)

I didn't mean my box, I am talking about most Sears SR boxes I have come across. Mine sounds great but I know that sansui will beat it hands down-it would be a fun cmpetition though :-) They are very well built,I mean this in the fact that mine has had a hard life-I found it in a barn, it was raining and supercold outside. And everything still works fantastic! I just think there is some quality on most of the boxes fromt the series. ;-)

:hmmm: I may just clean her up and paint her-Then sell her :w00t:

No doubt they are well built. Not what I would call a tank, but put together very well. :-D I would fix her up!

This not only gives you a chance to sharpen those repair skills, but you can do some mods without guilt of ruining an M70, M90, Conion or some other so called POS grail.
