About a year and a half ago, I stumbled upon what was a bargain, but a homely beast on the 'Bay. It was cheap enough and had enough features to catch my interest. Given it was a Sears unit I knew it was an AKA of something I just didn't know (and still don't know) what.

Well, two things were clear when I got it...

1. Dirt...plenty. Obviously lived the nicotine life.

2. Functions...barely. Tuner was out of whack, no cassette, line in uneven.

Needless to say, this was not something I wanted to speak of as I already had (and still have) plenty of project boxes. Well, I figured after watching Frank (Hemiguy) paint his Telefunken HP-800 then this would be a great candidate. Also, I am known by quite a few of you out there for speaker mods and here was another candidate. After some work over the course of a few months she was complete. But I never took pics or posted until now. Bobby is the only one who has seen it albeit not completed right before the '09 Sunshine Mix.

It is actually a very nice sounding box. Loud as heck, if screechy, at max volume, but most are. Will lose it beyond 2/3 of volume in the bass department (depending on music) but for normal listening pretty nice. I was quite surprised after I took out the sorry excuse for speakers including the housings they came in. (I actually reworked some MDF cabinets I found in a thrifty from a Sears shelf unit which it too had piss poor speakers.) I reworked attachments so they would mount without coming off and "look" factory. I also ditched the RCA speaker plug ins at the rear of the box for real speaker clips and added them to the new speaker cabinets when I added the speakers as well. I went for more of a textured metallic finish but since it's been so long since I've painted it I couldn't tell you what color it is. It's a Krylon product, that I know. I then hit it with a clear satin top coat and acrylic sealer.

Here she is. :-D I also posted the original speaker so you could see how pathetic it is and the original color.

About the sears type decriptions:
The relevant model specific number is either underlined or printed in bigger digits.
Only 4 - or sometimes 5 digits after the point are expressing relevant type no. of Sears boxes.

seems that the "realistic modulaire/modulette" descriptions were similar to the sears "series xxxx " descriptions,
from each of this series different boxes came out.

Always there have been EXTRA number descriptions.
look ,another modulaire1000 from the end 80s...:

NIce looking box.
I know Sanyo made a lot of the Sears AKA's but wasn't familiar with Radio Shack and Sears having the same models. :hmmm: :-)

it would be interesting to see the box-fix hack... ;-)

I didn't really take any pics of the cleanup and mod progress. The only real hack was changing the RCA speaker outs to clips. That was really super simple. The most work was cutting the box to fit the new terminals. :-)

The SR series boxes are both-they have nice bass, and they are ****C*R*Y*S*T*A*L**** clear :stereo:

The SR models are the ones you want inside and outside, the bass isn't obnoxiuos but just enough you will feel it and experience and appreciate the music, not the bass of the box (something I think people forget-like wanting a V8 just for the rumble and not the performance)

Whoaaaaa...the 2100 series are nice, but nowhere remotely close to the Sansui in quality or power. I say this so there are no unrealistic expectations. Keep in mind as well, that the 2198 version was the top of the line (based on what info I could find scouring around) at that time for Sears. (It has Dolby, music search, seperate phono and line in, etc.) But a Sansui it is not. Look at the speaker housing I took a picture of and it will tell you all you need to know.

Also keep in mind, we are talking about a department store brand manufactured by someone else. The Sansui was designed and built by a (at one time) manufacturer of serious home audio equipment. And it shows in the portables that carried their name at a time when it meant something.

I am not knocking the box TRC is selling, let's get that understood. Just want everyone to be clear as to what it is and not overstate it. It's a good box that has good sound and as he said will make a nice project box. :-)
