Ha, that must have been back when people thought 5500's were rare. I remember one sold for $700 without a box or anything. Then the market got flooded and they go for only like 200 now.

What amazes me is how consistently people pay an average of $400 for a clean M70. Do all those people really have nostalgia for that box and remember it from their youth, or are they buying it only because the forum says it's great?
I did buy an M70 solely based on what this forum said. Never even hear one before. But I got it in Japan for next to nothing, like $5.00 or something. Mine was POUNDED, that's why I painted it. But it was everything described.

I have never heard the Hitachi TRK-9150, bit of a funky looking box, might have something to do with the price. But if it cranks
Never heard the Universum 16000 either.... :hmmm: Might be adding these 2 to the long list

1.You are 100 percent right. Like that saying goes- “How much is a boombox worth? Well its worth as much as someone is willing to pay for it!” lol
2.Also, like anything else people “collect.” I think “when” you want something and the “availability” of what you want makes all the difference in the world. Some weeks I see 7 to 10 931s for sale from 25 to 300 bucks. Some weeks I see none. Same with M-70, and Magnavox D8443s….. For example I bended and took a chance on a JVC 838 that’s not working. Spent like 80 bucks for the damn thing. But I did it because at the time – I just couldn’t find one (the seller never clarified if it was working. I took a similar chance on a Sharp 8989 and it paid off)). NOWWWWWWWWWWWW I’ve seen about 5 or 6 in the last 2 weeks and I’m kicking myself. I guess the key word is “patience” lololol
I have come to the conclusion NOTHING is rare! There are plenty of radio's out there of damn near every model and if you can't get one, get over it and move on. Patience is the key if there is something you really want and if you want it THAT BAD, save up, prepare to pay and put a "Wanted" ad here on the site and ask for one. For the right price, Someone will part with it. :-)

I've seen 838's go as high as $400 in top condition, so getting one for $80 is quite nice even if it doesn't work.

True! And also one just sold this morning for 71 bucks and the only thing that didn't work was the right speaker! lol One solda night or 2 ago for 34 bucks that was broke down and there is one more on Ebay now thats bidding at 10 bucks with 2 days to go. You just have no way of knowing when an excess of a certain box will be on the market.

Here’s a bit of an off topic comparison

I used to take my sons to a comic book and a vintage toy store years ago. The store had every 80s toy you could think of. Teddy Ruxpin, Gobots, He-Man, GiJoe, Turbo Teeen, etc…..EVERYTHING - LOL And I was also shocked that the stuff really wasn’t expensive.

The owner explained it to me like this –“ The 80s was the first true decade where a lot of folks kept all their toys, books, electronics, tapes etc. So when the recession hit; you quickly had a boatload of 80s toys, comics and stuff on Ebay, resale and antique shops. The stuff is just not as rare as everyone thinks it is”

This relates to boomers in a lot of ways and in a lot of ways it doesn’t.

Yeah, very true, But the 80's kids (me) are at that age where they want their toys back and they have the money to pay for it. Allot of people (not us) want their boombox and eBay is the only place to find it and they will PAY (not us).

WE are smarter than that. WE come here, make friends and deal / swap between ourselves and avoid those super inflated prices (sometimes).

I don't see members here buying the radio's that are record setters when it comes to high prices. At least they don't come here and brag about it if they do.

Hahaha. Please tell me someone here has seen the movie "Idiocracy"

That toy reminds me of the demolition derby part... Not sure if its appropriate to say... Too funny.

Yeah, we get Idiocracy on the TV here every so often. I think that Channel 5 owns the rights to show it. Mike Judge has done funnier work, such as the brilliant Beavis and Butthead. I still laughed at Idiocracy, but that's because I had been smoking rather heavily at the time and would probably have laughed at Gimped photos of the queen's head on Beyonce's body.

That's big money on a unit that looks a little rough. Those rusty, water stained speaker grills will need a repaint at least.

The 7200 was always are very nice looking model though, I can definately see the appeal for collectors.

James.... :-)

These buyers must be mad - over $2000 for a box with a dead channel, missing tuning knob and possible broken tuner, muffled sounding decks!!!!!!!! This is getting out of hand.
