It's available in 3mm i/d, yes, but the solution is to buy the 2mm i/d stuff (1.98mm to be exact, as seen above), which is a good snug fit. My concern with the medical grade stuff is that it could - depending on whether you have a suitable means of removing one of the Oillite bushes - be too stiff. It's just a case of which one the individual finds better to work with.

Here's a thought Chris: PM me your address and I'll send you (free of course) some of the pink silicon to try, that way, you can make your own mind up about which type you prefer and I won't be remotely offended if you decide on the medical tubing but as long as the dimensions are correct then either is equally suitable.
Too stiff? You can quite easily remove and refit the Viton tubing - I know, I've done it many times with little force required.

I may be wrong but I always thought a hose with a harder compound would be more durable than a soft hose in this particular, non-standard application where you are using the outer surface of the hose for the transfer of power to another rubber surface of a harder compound. The outer surface of the Viton hose is also slightly textured thus removing the need to sand the hose to provide grip.

Each to their own. :-) In the end, I suppose what ever works is OK.

James.... :-)

My tube also measured OD- 5.0 mm X ID- 2.0 mm. I also liked the fact that it was black and once cut to size and installed it looks just like the original.

I spent a good while looking for an 8989 as its a great looking box and I'm slightly addicted to Sharps.

I got one in the end in a bulk trade with an S2G member for pretty much nothing. The looks don't disappoint and it was easy to sort the deck having done loads of GF's. It's an ideal size and weight for carrying about but I wasn't that impressed with the sound on mine...the smaller 9090 was better. It was ok but I chucked it on eBay in the end. Maybe I just got an iffy one?
Too bad Jorge89 bought my RGB 8989. The deck was trashed but it sounded good & looked amazing...I wonder if Jorge89 still has it.

Oh, BTW, those are 6.5" woofers, same as the GF-777z...

Cheers,
Cpl

Ok guys,I'm the GF-8989II expert here,I bought one brand new in 81'
and I have 2 8989II's now.
First of all this is about one if the easiest decks ever
to rebelt!
Also this has a totally different deck than the older
9090,9191,9292,9494,9696 decks,different design!
Never had one with a bad capstan, these are beautiful and
very loud units, mine are super loud, not a lot of bass but
super cool units.
The only bad inherent design is that you have to
clean the inside of the flywheel and the 2 little tires that
ride on the inside if the back of the flywheel, they
get dirty thus making the FF & Rewind become sluggish, slipping.
Also the rewind spring on the Rewind only tire wheel is basically doesn't have
enough tension after time so thus rewind will not
work correctly. These damn things always play though.
great decks, just be sure to clean that flywheel mint and
those tires for the Rew.and the FF.
Same deck as 8787,9797.
Sweet to work on and I can pretty much guarantee no
tubing necessary on these gems!
I know,I have belted a 8989II and my 9797.
Same exact deck,Chris call me,I can help you totally!
I'm beginning to be a bit if a Sharp expert as I have totally
restored 2 9494's and a 9696.Those decks are way harder
with their inherit goo deterioration capstan tubes!
It's a can of corn!!!!:)

Thank's for the great advise. I agree, the decks come out easy, you remove that front cover and it's all right there. Brilliant design. I will get in there and clean the flywheel and drive tires.

Yeah, it's a great deck, works perfectly!

The whole radio is super simple to work on. One plug for the front case, 3-4 plugs on the deck, all the pots are open for cleaning.

As for sound, I was surprised. It's a loud box! Not a bass machine, no. If I have any bitch is that it doesn't have bass at low volume either, like the TRC-920. I wish it had a Loudness button for low volume bass.

Even so, it get's loud and doesn't break up. Once I get the case finished and painted, it's gonna be a sweet daily driver!
