I was in my garage listening to the wonderful sounds of the Panny 680 and wondering why such a wonderful sounding box was so dull looking. It had no characteristics that would make you WANT to look at it. I like the gold accent around the tweeter but the dull gray ring around the speaker didn't make sense to me...so I HAD to make some changes.. :-D ...I stayed with the gold theme and painted the speaker trim and added a few extra touches. I painted gold lines to separate the components and painted the center portion of the handle gold. I tried not to do too much. Just wanted to "freshen" up the look and add some pop...here are some pic's...let me know what you think...all comments are appreciated...

Melly, you do some beautiful work....

But in my eyes, the adds don't work. I think if you had trimmed the very outer edge of the speaker rings in gold (as is on the tweets) it would have worked better. Plus, at the handle, maybe the outer sections (like on some other boomers that are chrome) would have worked better. And between the components should be blacked out to truly make them look like seperates. Plus a softer gold seems to match what is on the unit, not as yellow, may have worked better.

I believe that the nature of the beast for the era which it came from just doesn't lend well to too much brightwork. I agree The DT-680 will not turn heads justr staring at it, but less may be more when accenting to me.

Hope that doesn't tee you off. :-/

Im not sure if this quite works melly but it's always nice to se a different take on things :-) I wish sombody could photo shop an m90 in chrome or silver just basically a few different takes on an m90 to give me ideas, as i would love a totally different looking m90, and would pay good dollar for one as i find the looks kinda boaring. :-)

:agree: ...I think after the paint cures I will redo the gold portions in a high gloss tuxedo black...this boomer may be too understated for such a "blingy" color...stay tuned...

Hey Melvin. Don't be too overly concerned with what others think about your box. This Panasonic is not going to be a classic or collector. The prices are low on these and there is no downside to customizing one to your liking. Just like the song goes... "I did it MY way..." Do it for you, and if you like it, and it works for you, keep on sprayin...

...I used Rustoleum Metallic Gold...with several coats of clear on top. I went with gold because all the writing on this platinum series is gold as well as the tweeter trim, so I tried to stay with that theme. I think I may experiment with a couple of other colors...maybe gloss black or chrome...but for now this color is growing on me. :-D

I like the look.I do agree with Oldschool on the speaker surround rim the outer edge would of been nicer like on the tweets. But I'm sure that can be reworked quite easily.Good job.The other areas are fine for me I like the gold separation between sections too.

I would not have thought I would have like adding the gold paint, but I think it looks pretty nice now.

I like it !!!!
l I think it makes an otherwise boring looking box pop.
I would have done the tweeter rings to match and maybe even the knobs and speaker dustcaps???
Call me tacky but I like Flashy boomboxes.
BTW Here is Ira's Jamaican Diver down M-90
