Got this large nice looking boomer from far far away on the slow-boat.
It's the aka of the two tone Hitachi TRK-8600 that was available in the UK. Apart from the colour the main differences are a music search on the cassette deck and the lack of a third speaker.
Not as original as the one Lee (StereoMad) showed here a few weeks ago. It's had its speakers changed and the Spider grills removed. It was quite cheap however even with the shipping.
What has me scratching my head is that the balance doesn't work. There is exactly zero warmth in the sound quality. I wasn't expecting much but it's a galaxy away from my UK spec one even though the UK one has led a charmed life.
I'm suspecting that the balance issue has something to do it. What do you think

I think the Perdisco one looks much nicer but that's probably as they are so rare over here.

I also think the grills on it look absolutely fine

No idea on the tech issue

I thought that one looked familiar

Sorry dude but that one according to the Ebay listing has a dead channel. It's likely whoever did the speaker swap and spider removal wired both sets of speakers to run off the one operating channel. So you're listening in mono - hence the flat sound.

The seller's description:
'1. It is missing one channel, though the sound plays through both speakers, but if you turn the balance knob to the left the sound disappears.'

Great looking box though.

The same seller is selling a TRK-8610 at the moment:

Yes it's what I suspected. I'm still ok with it as the condition and price made it worth getting such a rare box over here.
I've had a CS-880 with the same problem sorted out a couple of years ago. The difference in sound was like night & day.

This is a Japanese domestic Hitachi TRK-8600RM.
They also had a silver one.

I think all the versions look nice, classic design with the tape in the middle, the VU's above the tape, the speakers, the tuning dial...everything. It's the only Hitachi I've really really liked. Anyone got the burgundy / ox blood one?
