Good point Superduper about the wattage. The silk domes ones aren't as "bright" a sound as the stock piezos. Higher power rated ones may not be very loud, or they might work fine...
honestly that’s ideal for me. My ears are very sensitive when it comes to harsh high frequencies and simblance. I enjoy the transparency of complementary tweeters, but too much brightness seems to have this “piercing” effect on my ears.
i recently got a set of Sony MDR-7506 after quite a while of trying to make up my mind about what to get to replace my broken daily drivers. Their primary use would be with my modded 5th gen iPod, which I keep loaded with about 600GB of strictly lossless files. Because lossless isn’t compressed by shaving off higher frequencies, I immediately noticed was how bright the headphones were, which had me kinda regretting them, and wishing I’d went back to an old set of bass-heavy Beats Studios. I kinda dismissed reviews claiming the 7506 are a bit on the bright side because I didn’t think it would be as big of an issue as it was, and wished I wouldn’t have. Luckily my iPod is software modded as well as hardware modded, because the RockBox firmware I run has extensive settings for EQ tweaking, which allows me to fix the issue by adjusting the sound profile, for a profile that more agrees with my ears.
with that said, I enjoy my 5150 and how it sounds, but if I were to mod it just for it to be too harsh on the highs, it would probably ruin the experience for me entirely. The little experience I have with piezo tweeters has always had me cringing at the piercing highs they produce. I considered taking a gamble on some factory 5150 tweeters I found to replace my non-functioning tweeters with, mostly just to keep it original, but this makes me double down on the decision not to.
