Surprisingly the JVC PC-55 has AMAZING BASS [tested with the DT680 speakers]. The DT680 has a more vibrant bass while the PC-55 has a more defined one. But it's still wide and room filling, the bass drum is pounding nicely it sounds great! In the mid and high frequency it's not even close the PC-55 has plenty of those and it sounds delicious I love it! Outstanding sound for a boombox the JVC PC-55 central unit is a clear winner for me. Very happy with it. It plays rock decently with the DT680 speakers but I will test it with other speakers as well.

With its original speakers the JVC is good but not great.

So that was my finding this month that central unit is the best I heard. Now a question... what do you think is better?

I thought you wanted something portable though. A JVC + Panasonic speaker combo isn't portable.

something that I can move in the house or outside, I am not looking for boomboxes to walk the street. Cheap vintage with amazing sound it can also be a compact hifi system like sony fh. :-)

The one great thing of the Panasonic RX-DT680 boombox it never distorts and it is bi-amp when connected to a Panasonic RX-DT680. So I think if you had the those Panny speakers connected to a Panny RX-DT680 it will blow the JVC PC-55 out of the competition.

The only bad thing of the Panasonic RX-DT680 is the inner circuitry which I believe is Solid State is too weak and tends to not last and breaks down easy. They have a history of Tape Deck & CD player of just not working after some time. I've had several and they all had the same dilemma. The tuners are strong so I still use one for work to listen to FM broadcasts. Early Sunday mornings I listen to a show which jams House Music and this thing rocks!

I disagree but that's just opinions I guess. The DT680 central unit distorts a lot when playing guitar distortion or classical loud parts, especially at loud volume.

I think people mostly are looking for strong vibrant bass to play beats, that's why the DT680 might be a favorite but otherwise the JVC PC-55 destroys easily the DT680 for everything else, rock, jazz and classic. Not even close. It's a clear sound, best mids and highs I heard from a boombox so far and the bass is plenty satisfying for me. I love the sound

********* WARNING *********

The 680s tweeters are 8 ohm and the drivers are 2.7 ohm and they are fed a signal from separate amplifiers.

As the tweeters in the 680 are fed by dedicated amps (that only send highs), it requires no 'crossover' to be placed between the speaker cables and the tweeter itself. So if you hook up the 680 speakers to the PC55, the tweeters will be feed a full range signal - BYE BYE tweeters!!!! :-(

Just thought I'd let you know before you do any more damage. :-)

So wait, if the Panny is bi-amped, then it should have 4 wires going to each speaker, right? If so, how the hell did you connect them to the JVC?

I used the red and black one and it works with only 2 wires.
That's good news!! If you only connected the black and red wires, then only the bass drivers were connected to the JVC. The tweeter wasn't connected! :-)

Newbies make me laugh. :-)

P.S Those JVC speakers must be crap if the 680s speakers (minus tweeters) sound better! :-)

It can if its feed a full range signal (not the case when connected to the 680).

It's always more desirable to only feed a speaker the frequencies its best at reproducing. The 680 drivers are only 4.5 inch so they are small enough to produce highs - just not as good as a tweeter would be.

I learn something that's cool.

The JVC speakers are decent, but they don't give enough bass. Is there an amazing pair of vintage speakers that I can buy to test all the central units I want?

Are those JVC speaker boxes properly tuned? It always makes me wonder when I see a square or rectangular bass port when proper ported enclosures always have round, cylindrical ports.

I'd check the ohms and size of those JVC speakers and maybe do a speaker swap - the bass won't increase much though if the cabinets aren't tuned properly.

Panasonic did a great job on the porting work on the 680. It's a delicate thing getting a box to resonate at the correct frequency for the size of cabinet and the specs of the speaker. Even removing the rubber wire grommet on the rear of the 680 speaker cabinets can kill the bass as it causes the box to go out of tune!!

Remember, 80% of the sound you hear from a ported enclosure is coming from the bass port when at resonance, not from the speaker itself so the output from the port is crucial.

The best quality sound overall I've heard from a Boombox is the Yamaha PC-8. It has the same 15 watts RMS per channel as the 680. It also has the same size drivers sitting in proper, ported timber enclosures - part of the reason the PC-8 to my ears sounds more HiFi - no boom, just plenty of tight, strong bass.

It doesn't distort until you have the volume slider above 8/10. It's just such a nice sounding amp. The Yamaha is also very strong on D cells - many of the 3 piecers run great on AC but flounder on DC. At 80 watts draw though, D cells won't last long! :-)

You are right, I saw a small seperation between one speaker front part and rear part. Was not noticeable first day but now that I have cranked it for so many days, the seperation worsen, do I have to glue it like a n00b or is there some technical trick I must consider before attempting to fix it myself?

Interesting,I love my PC-55's!! Yes I hooked the unit uo for a while to my JBL home speakers many years ago for a while and was very surprised in the sound I heard! These are no joke,27wpc!!
Now I have the Yamaha PC-9,how does it compare to the PC-8? Curious.
Yes I have the 680,and quite frankly it's scary the loudness and the bass that come out of this thing.
My PC-9 is incredible also with very very clean sound and great bass.
Interesting test here.😎
