I bought my first home in St Petersburg 1 yr ago. It is 0.5 mile from downtown, and was a ghetto about 15yrs ago. The neighborhood was restored about 10 years ago, starting with a large influx of gay people, due to the historic craftsman houses that were very cheap at the time. It's turned into a neighborhood of young professionals, and younger retirees that don't want to live in "old people" communities.
It just so happens that both neighbors love my music, including hip hop, so I got very lucky. My yard is only 50ft wide (5,000ft2 property), so it could have been really bad! But I've been accustomed to condo living, so I will take a yard of any size!
If you have neighbors that don't like the volume, I've found that comprimise is the best thing to do, as you want to get along with your neighbors!
