For a nice rich, well balanced but not necessarily the loudest, I've always been impressed with the following;

Aiwa TPR-950 (Not big physically but the sound is top notch)

Pioneer SK-353

Crown CSC-850

Sharp 9494 / 9696

Technics SA-C05

Panasonic RX-C100

As already stated, subjective of course but I consider myself to have a good ear for what constitutes a 'quality' sound. :surf:

Thanks for the responses. I currently have a few old boxes, Toshiba RT-S932 that I purchased new in the 80's, and a Magnavox 8443 I just picked up for 3$. I like the sounds of each, but would like to see how much better I can go while keeping in the ghettoblaster category. :-)

The JVC M90 on ebay is tempting since it is from an original owner and with orginal manuals, but that is a lot of money to spend and I'm not sure if the sound quality is that much better compared to what I have:

Item number: 120572296629

comparing those two boxes to the m90 is like throwing kittens in with pit bulls.

thats just mean floyd.......... :annoyed:

oh i love cats dave it was just an example ,i would never throw kittens in with pit bulls :nonono: :-D .

This is a subject with subjectivity at its core.
All of the opinions here are soundly based on the sounds an individual hears with their ears.

For me personally, having heard most of the boxes espoused I have always thought my Hibachi was the sweetest most mellifluous box.

That Hibachi is a nice box, Ed. But, can you grill on it? :-D
