Hi,

I prefer sound quality over loudness, so I was wondering:
What are the best made boxes are in terms of sound quality (good bass, midrange, treble)?

Is a Marantz better than a JVC (7000 vs M90 etc) ? :hmmm:

Is a Conion better than a M70 or M90? :hmmm:

How do the Panasonic RX series compare to the Conion/JVC?

What about pioneer, I see a few on ebay. Can they stand up the sounds of a M70?

Please help my confusion. :-/ ;-) :angelic: :hmmm:   :'-( :-/

This is a subjective, and for some, a sore subject matter. What you will find is this...

For overall performance a high end component system box can and will crush the best mono case system out there, the JVC RC-M90. I would say the Aiwa CS-880 is a close second.

This is not a slight to the M-90 or any mono case system but to it's design limitations. These type boxes are beautiful and give the advantage of no external moving parts...e.g. Speakers. Plus the mono case systems were always cheaper than the comparable component boxes.

The best component system is a toss up. You have the Telefunken Hifi Studios, The Sharp GX-300, Rotel RPM-10 Sony FH-5/7, Pioneer CK Series etc. as well as the Grundig Partycenters. In general these have the most robust power/sound/speaker steups out there and allow for some really great engineering in the same manner as a small home shelf system with batteries as an option. But they don't have what is considered the "classic" look although they've been around just as long.

I myself am a fan of Sansui...see my avatar. :-D

The bottom line is, let your ears talk to you, and heart follow your eyes if looks count. :-D

I would say it really depends on what kind of sound you like to hear. I don't think there is a single boombox that has 100% of the sound all people look for. Some units have better treble response; some have better bass. Then you have those that are muddy and others that have a transparent sound.

Do you already have a boombox or are you looking to purchase your first one?

Thanks for the responses. I currently have a few old boxes, Toshiba RT-S932 that I purchased new in the 80's, and a Magnavox 8443 I just picked up for 3$. I like the sounds of each, but would like to see how much better I can go while keeping in the ghettoblaster category. :-)

The JVC M90 on ebay is tempting since it is from an original owner and with orginal manuals, but that is a lot of money to spend and I'm not sure if the sound quality is that much better compared to what I have:

comparing those two boxes to the m90 is like throwing kittens in with pit bulls.

Sound is very subjective and depends on personal taste. I have listened to a lot of different 1 piece and 3 piece units. To my ears and most on this site the M90 is king of the 1 piecers for overall sound quality. For 3 piecers there is a good sized list that you can't go wrong with...the Sony FH series, the Panasonic DT 680 or 690, Sharp GF 800 or 939...and a whole host of others. For medium sized 1 piece boxes the JVC M70 is very high on most lists for overall sound as well as the Sanyo M9994. But your best bet is to do like I was lucky enough to do...make friends with someone who has all of these top boxes in his collection and visit him often to compare the sounds of various boxes. Or you could just ask about a particular box you have in mind and we are more than happy to give our comments...that is what I do... :-D ...and by the way most of the comments I receive here are the reason I have so many in my collection...and they are all good in there own way...

Tsk.. everyone always forgets the poor old BigBen.

This radio is my second best sounding after the M90, and to be quite honest some music sounds better on her than the M90.

I've never had/heard the Aiwa CS-880 yet, so this is my second best sounding one piece behind the M90.

And never discount the old Lasonics for dynamic sound quality, not in the league of the above mentioned, but still really great stuff.
The J1 Super Jumbo 747 is up there too.

Rock On.

I agree with Gluecifer - my BigBen is almost as good as my M90 - and sometimes it's better.
I've had Aiwa 880 - and no offense to Aiwa fans, but it wasn't even close to either one of these two. If anything - the Aiwa was more like M70 - only with a little better bass

That Big ben looks quite terrifying with the grill off.

So much for finding the "one" best radio, I guess I need to start building shelves :-)
