I am trying to ship a 931 to Boxed out. BUT It costs $340 at the USPS

and $542 at UPS, $473 at FedEx

I know everybody will say I am wrong-BUT I went to each store-EACH with the box all packed up. That was the cheapest they could do. Stinger had thee same prob,.

I don't see any way people have paid $150 to ship there but in my neck of the woods it is impossible. 42701

:agree:

The only way is if you put 1-layer of thin bubble wrap, then wrap cardboard tightly around the whole thing. The size makes a huge difference in price. There is no way to pack them in a safe manner and get reasonable shipping charges. It's definitely a cross your fingers type of thing. Cargo space on planes going down under are high $$.

I had the same prob.
It's not just you Chris.
There's no way I can ship a boombox with 1 layer of bubble. :nonono:
Much less a Lasonic. It'll arrive as dust. With a few knobs.

for fedex air freight --fully insured and double boxed--

something is way off ?? :sadno:

I have tried to ship to Australia with similar shipping rates. I have tried FedEx, UPS, USPS & DHL. The cheapest was FedEx at around $400. This was for a double boxed Lasonic 931. The buyer stated that he previously had received a c100f from America for $100 shipping. I tried three different shipping locations and couldn't find anything close to this.

i think the 200 is a big rip !!! :annoyed:

but --if these new freight charges stay at 400 plus --
that would totally kill most of the commerce between our 2 countries :dunce:

How Much!!!!!!!!!

That is going to be devastating!! I'm trying to save for a Lasonic or Conion (which I'm never going to find floating around in .au) but there's no way to justify $400 in shipping no matter what box it is. It's hard enough trying to find good boxes over here as it is.

It would probably be better to buy 3 or 4 and take a holiday to the States and bring them back!!! :-D :-D

Do any of the shipping companies break the fees down? I'm curious who is trying to rip off the consumer: the shipping docks, the au government, etc.

When i Tried to ship an m90 to skippy1969 from the uk to america.... they wanted over $300 that is like over 1 weeks money for me then when i finally took the box there they wouldnt ship it anyway... I think buying and selling boxes to other countries is impossible now... such a shame but what can you do..

yep, it's totally crazy sending 'boxes from here in oz too to anyone stateside - outrageous prices, partly based on size and weight (never mind that seamail is not much cheaper!).
as a result, a friend here has decided not to sell his black NatPana rx-c100 (u know how heavy, huge that is...) to a buyer in CA, because shipping is crazy.
looks like he will have to sell it locally in oz...

I've had four boxes from the u.s and about eight from japan over the last couple of years.

I've not paid more than US$180 for the shipping on any of them.

Boxes include:

Vela DiscoLite
JVC M90
Sony CFS-99
RISING 2020
Lasonic TRC-931
Lasonic TRC-975
Toshiba S90
Toshiba S93
Torec/Intersound J-7
National 5700
Sharp GF-535

Some of these are very big (and in some cases rather heavy) radios, I've never had any damage in transit either.
I've bought off SINISTER, redbenjoe and the rest through EMS shipping from japan.

I tried recently to get one of BMoney's 975's but the shipping was too hardcore for me unfortunately.

I don't know what's going on with these wildly fluctuating shipping costs, maybe differences from state
to state in the u.s have a big impact on the amount.

I'm just posting from my own experience, I've never sent a box anywhere (I've never sold/traded any of mine)
so I've no idea about posting them from .au to anywhere else, but you can, DEFINITELY, get radios shipped to
.au from the u.s for under $200.

Good luck to everyone involved!! Hope it works out.

Rock On.

All the major shippers have websites and you can easily check their rates online. All you need to know is the size/weight/origin/destination for a shipping quote. So there is NO NEED to wonder whether it can or can not be done, and for how much.

I shipped a big box with Hitachi 8180, packing materials and clothes from Germany to myself the last time I was there... The cost was around 60 Euros ($90 at the time) and it took about six weeks to get here.

That was a tough pill to swallow.... but these are some really crazy shipping charges I'm seeing mentioned here!

It almost sounds like it may get to the point where it becomes economically viable to have Australian members who want to buy boomboxes from North America collaborate purchases and work with a West Coast freight company to start ship loads of boomers down under, one pallet at a time. :-P

one more thought regarding this 200 // 400 discrepancy :hmmm:

we have members - -that may have commercial fedex accounts --
and their prices might be substantially lower --

than for most of us common off-the-street -- ONE SHOT newbs :dunce: :-) :-)

As of right now, there is absolutely NO DEFINITE way to ship a large boombox from the U.S. to Australia for $200 or below. I'll even post the shipping quotes I received for my box weighing in at 31 lbs. with dimensions of 34x19x11 in. I'd love to be proven wrong.

Proper packing is essential to ensure the boombox arrives in one piece. Especially when dealing with Lasonics and others in their class. There is NO WAY I'd ship them with one layer of bubble wrap and expect a cardboard box to handle the rest of the protection duties. These things are known to break apart just shipping them around within the Continental U.S. I cannot, in good conscience, ship somebody something they've paid for with their hard earned money, knowing it's going to arrive at their doorstep damaged. Much less, risk destroying an otherwise serviceable boombox that's already endangered in numbers. What's the point?

Of course, everyone is free to make their own decisions and ship their items however they see fit.

WOW, all this trouble just for me.
I hope we can sort something out because I have found the perfect speciment of TRC 931 and as you all know, I have been looking for some time!
I can't understand why there is such a big discrepency in quotes and why shipping is $400 to Australia.
As Chris said, it's cheaper to send a boom box to Iraq than to America's allies in Austrailia.
The only way I can see it arriving here is if you do as one of the other sellers mentioned and wrap it with a thin layer but that's very RISKY :nonono:
These quotes that Chris mentions are (2 boxes),then wrapped in a big box at ups and and insulated with bubble wrap.
The people who have shipped for less or maybe Gluecifer ,SINISTER or redbenjoe can tell us how the boxes were packaged in order to keep the costs low? :-/

TRY shopping over there --- for freight quotes on your PRE-PAID
imports --and find some friend with a business --who has a corporate
FEDEX account
