Bobby. I think yours was a special case. Most of these M70 grills are glued so tight that you could destroy the case trying to remove them.

Yeah, glued very tight. Skippy said he uses some kind of heat gun to get the glue to soften up and pull the grills..... I have yet to do that :-O

Hey FD, how did you pop the grills off? any special technique??? :hmmm:
You will need to have the front case off and speakers removed. Then remove the four screws in the front for each grille and carefully push the grilles off. They have a tiny amount of glue to help hold them in place.
I was able to remove mine, (when I 1st got it) without any problems and without taking apart. Maybe they were already removed, but the speakers and grilles were still dirty, so I cleaned em all up :-D

Not saying there isn't an M70 out there with glue that wasn't overdone like most, but I've probably had over a dozen M70's pass through my hands, and I have yet found one that is removable. I think the grills on one of Melly's M70's came off, but I'm pretty sure that was after his wife ran over it with the SUV. :grim: :hmmm:

I need to find another M70 just so I can see what it will look like with different colored LEDs.

There is a LED available that cycles through different colours every 5 seconds, just in case you can't make up your mind :) (Red, Green, Dark Blue, Yellow, Light Blue, Purple, White)

I tried it but didn't have it close enough to the tuner window for a full effect, green looked good and purple wasn't bad. Blue was the brightest. I stopped the video before the full cycle - felt sick lol

Great Job Bobby!!!!
Looking nice and minty.
BTW you got very lucky with the grilles.
I have never been able to get the grills of an m-70.
and I have had quite a few of them.

Seeing how cool that looks I would like to become good with boombox restoration, buy a M70 and buy a kit from :superduper: just to get a M70 with that awesome mod! The funny thing is I'm totally serious, I just have to evaluate if I have the money :hmmm:

First when i saw that you had developed a LED mod to the M70 I thought that the LEDs for the scanner had been modified to VU LEDs! That would of been pretty cool too  of course it would kind of make the scanner itself useless...

wow, baking soda paste...I will try that. I have some hard to clean knobs and switches on my older National that needs more attention. The LEDs are fantastic, makes the M70 look more modern. Did anyone do the mod with different colors that you all know of?
