Well I don't know about getting to the workings of the deck. Without some serious desoldering etc I cannot see more of the rear mechanism than the flywheel, motor, and a couple of other pulleys which run belts from the flywheel. I cannot remove or even raise the capstan to see if there is a tyre anywhere.

I can turn the capstan by hand in one direction and raise / lower the heads by hand too. Whatever mechanism interacts the two must be damaged or broken.

Mechanical decks are just that. They don't use motor to raise heads but mechanically go up as play is pressed. Now if this is semi auto deck like 1st edition Lasonic then deck keys are manual but motor controls heads rising. Usually on semi auto and auto deck there is a channeled gear as in pic with blue arrow. This is Sanyo M X720😉

Ok thanks guys, I think it may be an issue with an idler or possibly a gear - if I rotate the capstan gently I can feel it clicking as if it's slipping against another gear somewhere in the mechanism. I hope there aren't any stripped teeth in there !!

I'm going to put this on the back burner for now and enjoy the superb FM reception and line in for Ipod / minidisc. I do intend to revisit the deck but I'm shifting to a new place soon so I don't want bit of boombox strewn everywhere. Once I get moved and get a better workspace, I may well go back in and have another look. I have a secret weapon in this plan in the shape of my good friend Graeme - he's a brilliant tech but also a busy guy who is hard to pin down for more than an hour here and there !

After licking my wounds for a while and doing a bit more reading, I decided to take some photos of the beast to make myself feel better. I enjoy photography and I enjoy boomboxes, so let's combine the two (albeit with a smartphone, because it was late and my 'big' camera needed a charge !). No comments about the 'Tiffany' cassette either please - it was the only one I had to hand in the garage......

Cheers everyone for the help received so far, here's to a great weekend for all :-) Keep on booming !

I've just realised some arsehole must have been into this machine before me, because there is (or there should be) a heat shield plate between the amp section and the back of the tape deck area. That shield is completely missing from my machine !

No wonder the deck doesn't work.
Yeah mate, and this arsehole here didn't make things any better (with the exception of adding belts that are actually belts and not liquorice bootlaces :-)

I'm going to go back in - which may be a bad idea. Be prepared for a 'parts box' to be listed for sale very soon ! I'm going to try and totally separate the deck from the chassis without desoldering anything. Logic would dictate that the deck is plugged into the amp rather than hard wired BUT - this is a Sanyo after all !!!

This is not a mechanical deck. It looks like it because it has keys but the play button does not engage the heads.. If you look closely, you'll see that the keys operate a complex mechanical switch assembly which can be seen on the bottom rear of chassis behind a small pwb that is heavily wired.

Yep I've found out about the deck being electronic as opposed to mechanical by ripping it out and having it fall to pieces on my workbench. I think someone has attempted repairs previously because there's all kinds of weird stuff going on in there.

The M9998 is the one box you can't open up and put back together without leaving some evidence to that effect. Its virtually impossible to put everything back exactly as it were. Those wiring looms... so easy to loosen and disconnect, so very hard to fit everything back. Its like trying to stuff a 20 pound turkey into a 10 pound roasting pan.
