Just to make it clear, I didn't say he HAD to use an adhesion promoter or primer, I said he could.
I also suggested to skip that step and just use a paint that's compatible with plastic.
Some people are nervous about painting plastics and the adhesion promoter/primer was a just a suggestion.

Personally, I've used SEM paint for most of my plastic jobs and have never had a blister or peeling problem even with dashboard pieces fully exposed to the sun.
For a couple of my Hamm's beer signs, I used Behr premium spray paint after wet sanding and haven't had any adhesion problems.
They're from 1956 so I have no idea what kind of plastic those are.

That said, in well over 30 refurbs, I've touched up some front panels but have never done a whole spray job on either the front or back panels.
The discoloration to some of the back panels never really bothered me.

I think I painted case backs with Stone Gray color which was a decent match to many panasonics.
That’s what I remember you doing. I left mine as is, you really never see the back when it’s on the shelf, properly baffled.

For the type of plastics used in the 1975 to 1988 types of boomboxes you will not need an adhesion promoter. Typical aerosol automobile paints like Dupli-color will work well. Sherwin Williams KRYLON aerosol paints and Rustoleum paints all give good adhesion.
Surface roughness gives better anchoring that help adhesion. There are so many ways to etch the surface for better adhesion with UV radiation.
Aromatic solvents like Xylene and Toluene are better for swelling cheap plastic materials.

Acetone, Toluene, Xylene, n- Butyl Acetate types are normally used in the aerosol cans.

A solvent blend is used in the aerosol cans along with a propellant. The Non-Volatile Mass is very low like 5 to 7%.
Dupli-Color is as sophisticated with this as I would get, I have had good results with it, and as Norm has pointed out, you really have to get it right in one, thin coat. The thinnest coat possibl. I have seen cases touched up with Plasticoat that you couldn’t tell had been painted. The finest steel wool you can find is better than sandpaper. The secret is that the less paint you use the better it will look.
