Here is a link to a preamp board with tone controls etc and input board. You could separate the pots from the original board and run ribbon cable to pots. This would allow you to use the same layout on the front of the casing.

Link for pre-amp - http://www.ebay.ca/itm/111374163512?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

Link for input selector - http://www.ebay.ca/itm/251769483569?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

I can't wait to see how you progress!

What if you were to build the back half of the box out of mdf, In order to get the thickness/depth but used the back half of the case to skin the unit? Very similar to your design but it would allow for better acoustics plus keeping the original look and feel.
Using bondo, or fiberglass to blend the back to the front of the original case...in essence the inner box is made from wood slightly smaller than the actual casing.
Hope this makes sense, I love this kind of Mod!
I'm looking at the interior volume I will need right now, I'm going to stay away from MDF, even though it will provide a nice thud, I will be using some sort of plastic, plexi or acrylic to keep the weight down to a minimum.

Thanks for sending these links. I have seen some of these on ebay,. was thinking the same thing. Depending on space, possibly mounting the pots and remote wiring the board somewhere else.
So, here are the speakers....first of all, they are plastic! They are super light, that's cool, but PLASTIC :nonono:

I have shot a video of the full tear down, need to edit it and get it uploaded to YouTube, I will post it shortly..

Wow not even a stamped basket....I haven't had a chance to take mine apart. I can't believe it "plastic" what a joke.

The nooks & crannies between those speakers would look SICK in Ford Grabber Blue

I doubt I'm going to change the color. I love all the chrome and it's in amazingly good condition, so I think a good bath and go from there. But I do like that blue!

Yeah, they really went for every penny here. I won't be reusing any of these speakers, but if anyone has another center speaker, I would like to try two of them in a project just for the hell of it.

Yep... pretty cheap stuff. Looks like they're pretty clean. That's cool.
The whole radio isn't bad at all. I am editing the tear down video so you all can see where I am going with this.

Are you painting the replacement speakers black to look original, Chris? It could be a 'sleeper' then...
Have a look at the video...you will see what happened when I tried to put the Lasonic speakers in...

You should post an unedited, unrated version as well, with all the bloopers included.
Oh, it's all in there

The video is great, love the commentary on the speaker choices Magnavox used! :bang: Why do companies nickel and dime something that could have been a great product?

I doubt those Lasonic speakers would have handled the power output of that D class amp anyway. They sure would have looked great in that Philips case though.

You're a patient man Chris. Just looking at the available space for your tweeters made me shudder!!

Keep going dude!

James.... :-)

It's really a shame they didn't do this radio right, Thankfully other manufacturers too this design and ran with it, thinking Aiwa!

Oh the tweeter thing is going to be a challenge. Not quite figured that out. I hate tweeters in the center of speakers, like car door tri-axles, but it might be :-/

I agree that the dreaded 'tweeter in front of the driver look' will make people think you've now got empty holes in your car door panels! :-)

What are the dimensions of the original tweeter cavities? Maybe a pair of these sweet sounding 25mm (OD) Pioneer 4 ohm soft dome tweeters might fit. These should take up a lot less room with their cylindrical shape than a traditional cone tweeter and they can handle big power (50 real watts RMS per channel) and have an ideal (90 dB) sensitivity. There is no cavity to put tweeters in. The tweeters you showed will most likely be what I will have to use. I don't really want to go any smaller. I will probably just cut the biggest whole I can without it looking like a hot mess from the front and build something to hold it from the back.

Chris, looks like that's a 2.1 amp. So perfect for you. 3-channel output. 2@15wpc and 1@30wpc. So you only need one amp.
