One of the great boombox mysteries explained.

I just looked at the deck out of mine, but I can't see the gear unless I take it apart.

For ANYONE who has a maggi with a non working cassette deck, they need to see this!

Thanks Bill for taking the time!

Repairing decks is that last dark science most of us are to afraid to tackle

This simple explanation makes it possible for us to do

Bill helped me with my 8443 by pointing me towards a Maggy D7240 for parts to replace my crusty gear...worked like a charm!

That crusty gear almost looks like plastic that was attacked by oil or grease. I wonder if it was a manufacturing mistake. Maybe they didn't know the gear grease they used would attack the plastic used to make the gear and swell / erode / destroy the gear over time.

Of course they probably didn't think people would be collecting them for resurrection 30 years later!

So the weird thing I noticed about new gear being used in play mode is that there is no grinding noise when in play mode without a tape in deck. 🤔 also the grinding actually seems like scraping more or less like friction. I'm wondering 🤔. I did try testing with the unit open and deck visible but with the fly wheel in way it's hard to tell exactly where noise is coming from. I do know this is my 2nd new gear I've used and has had same issue but when I found original gear there was no issue!!!

I don't get why that gear is odd compared to other gears in deck as well. It's like Magnavox purposely used a garbage defective gear!!!!

If the gear goes bad, you have to buy another radio, basic economics
