it really depends if you are just collecting and not really worried about sound which by the way i used to have the smaller maggie 8300 with strap , the sound was not that bad, its just most people would like to hear thunderous bass but i belive each box has its own unique sound ,, so if you are ok with how it will sound and love the looks then you will be happy... :-)

I have a yellow one. I loved it. It is broken now. The cat knocked it over. :nonono: Bad kitty :nonono: I was pretty upset for awhile and a bit depressed. I still haven't opened it up to see what broke, but it won't power up. I keep my office door closed now, but the cat seems afraid to go in there now anyway, most likely because of the box falling over.

I think the 8300 was very loud, but not the greatest tone. It sounded awesome paired with a Panny Platinum 3 piece unit. Tuner seems to work well as did the cassette. The big problem with the 8300 as well as other Maggies is that line in only works when the cassette deck is running. So if you want to use your mp3 player, then the cassette will have to be on record the whole time.

I do want to get a replacement, but there always seems to be another Boomboxery member bidding on eBay for the good ones. My daughter's birthday is this week so I'll be broke for a while, so I'll be off eBay for a least 3 more weeks.

I own one. It's pretty easy to carry around, but I find the sound unimpressive. The piezo tweeters don't kick out enough treble, the bass isn't very strong or extended, and it generally sounds a bit muddy. Worse yet, it doesn't feel very quality. The deck buttons seem cheap, and looking inside, it uses mystery brand capacitors.

Perhaps look for a GE Blockbuster if you want serious bass.

viewtopic.php?f=2&t=3902&p=53298&hilit=moving+sound#p53298

No high quality unit, but for sure one of the most sportive and funny looking boxes

Hey ViennaSound, the Yellow Moving Sound in your collection, are those meant to be water resistant? I remember in the 80's there were quite a few walkman's and small "Beach" radios that could be "Splash" resistant. Was that the idea with this radio?

Nope, this one is for sure not "waterproof"

I own a outdoor-TEC and a SONY ( i gave to DRMZ), but those had gum-isolated buttons and caps on every connection.
This one is ment to be a sportive and young looking boombox.
Skaterpark, seaside,..... but not dust/waterproof. ;-)

btw: in this thread you can see the most MOVING SOUNDs from PHILIPS....

I consider the 8300 a very good sounding box compared to the 8443.The thing that makes the difference is the 8300s equalizer.I think the 8443 would have sounded as good if it had one instead of its bass and treble pots. (Of course the 8443 also has that nearly useless "spacial" control that simply gives you some semblance of stereo at full rotation). The 8300 by comparison, can have a nicely balanced sound. Its bass is nice though more modern recordings can overpower it.It sounds great on '80s music and synthpop,rock,etc..Overall,its sound is not the higher fidelity type like the boxes with cleaner mids.It is a very nice sounding boboombox and worth getting. In fact I don't consider them typically overpriced on Ebay.

Concerning the line-in issue the 8300 rates much higher than the 8443 also.It has better sensitivity .With my 8443 I have to hook up to the line out and use a headphone amp to get a good amount of volume (Two in a series works much better). The 8300 has great sensitivity straight from the box.The line in issue really shouldn't put you off.The downside is that you will have to have its cassette door open and the tape motor running while you use it.Otherwise its perfectly fine.

You guys have said it all!

D8300 is better than the D8443 because of the EQ adjustments and dual cassette
Line in works when play & record are pushed meaning motor runs all the time (cassette door open if no cassette case is used)
Looks cool
Great color
Easy to carry
Definetly not for booming bass or for high quality sound
More of a mild "polka box"

You are really stuck on the Maggies!

I think he's "stuck on em cause they are ones that are readily available and in his price range.

I would look at others brands that offer Line ins and better sound without blowing a $100 budget.
Check out the following boxes
Panasonic RX-5050, it's loud as all hell but shy on the bass. I love that box.

JVC RC 656 good sound pretty loud but looks are a bit understated with the love it or hate it grills.

Realistic SCR-8 great sound cool LED's can be found for under 100 but might need deck work.

JVC PCV series boxes are prtty good sounders and mid levels and have hyper bass if you dont mind the 90's style boxes, they can be had for well under $100

Sanyo has a mess load of boxes that sell for under 100 on ebay all the time. but I'm not sure which sound good as I've never owned a Sanyo  . Trying to change that though. ;-)

Theres alot of GE boxes that sound great too. these are sleepers as well.

JVC Kaboom if you want serious bass and dont mind modern looking box(tube) can be found on C-list for around $100.

Keep on asking questions man, I'm sure you'll find something you like thats in the budget.
Good Luck.

IMO, the only Magnavox worth owning is the 8443.
But you need a line-in for your iPod.
Neither the 8443 nor the 8300 is going to offer a workable line-in.
You'd be better off with something like this for cheap: [ebay]190420975389[/ebay]

BMoney, in my heart I know your right. But the D8300 is so 80s bubble gum style that I can help myself but to want it. I think getitdone just talk me it in to a black one this time.

Very nice Panny you posted. Classy.

:agree: The D8300 is a cool box. The style. The strap. The aqua blue trim on the onyx black box. It screams 80s cheese. Get it if you can El Cad! But the lack of a line-in is a bit of a turn off. It's a turn off on the D8443 too but the D8443 just looks so hardcore.

I think that $50 Panasonic I posted would sound equally good (if not better than the Maggies) and the line-in feature will be satisfying. Again though, just my 2 cents.
