You just gotta understand, you were pretty constantly ragging on some boxes that many members here actually like, and have spent some good time finding, restoring and modifying.
OK, well that's something i can't relate to. if someone rags on something i like, i don't take it personally because it doesn't have anything to do with me. i don't define myself by the things i like and i like some objectively terrible things like robot monster
robot-monster_319.jpg

i EXPECT people to make fun of it and even do myself. i have a logical introverted way of thinking, so in my world, items have nothing to do do with people that like them, unless of course they like things that hurt people or the planet etc. i really don't understand how people can take criticism of the things they like personally because of my emotional detachment, though i have feelings too.

for instance, in the "wierd boombox" thread, when people started getting worked up because the original link to the lady gaga/madonna i posted was dead and started calling me fail. i just took it in stride, and THOUGHT i playfully answered the accusation with playful banter. i will try to remember that people here personally identify with their boomboxes. it just never occurred to me.

as to the "duck rock", of course not everyone was around back then or even did listen to hip-hop. i have that record as well as LL cool jay's radio, but i just thought that it would have been posted 1,000 times here because it's so distinctive and because i'vee seen several people sporting custom painted boxes that i assumed were inspired by the duck rock.

i custom painted my lasonic as a tribute to the box, and just figured it was a well known holy grail box of sorts.

if anyone wants to comment on how dumpy my bike system looked, go for it, but it sounded pretty good.

now THAT'S a distinctive custom system!

still not quite as over the op as this "famous" one though

back to the "manners" thing, as it applies to criticizing particular boomboxes, there IS an "if there's one boombox i can't stand" thread here afterall

oh i'm SURE it's loud. those look like 18"+ woofers in the center and i'd bet the thing's powered by a lot of watts. it's a pretty clean install too, but it reminds me of an over the top spaceship from a japanese cartoon. i just go for clean and simple designs myself

this about what a boombox i designed would look like

You're starting to get on my nerves.
First of all most people come in and introduce themselves, say where they're from and why they're here. What box got them into collecting or whatever...something. They interact with others, comment on other people's scores and what not...and kinda get a feel for the forum. They ask for help on something...someone chimes in to help out.
Or some people just lurk and read through threads and don't feel the need to post or haven't worked up the courage yet. Which is fine. We welcome everyone.
You on the other hand come in blazin and say give me pics so I can make some tshirts to sell....this box is ugly that box is ugly...and proceed to try to give a half ass history lesson on boomboxes. Then decide to make the same snarky comments in multiple threads when someone calls you out on it. So this is all I know about you so far.
You kind of came off like an 18 year old kid walking into a classic car show yelling **** Mopar I'll take a tuned up Civic any day.
This is a pretty tightknit community with lots of friends and lots of respect. There's been arguments, misunderstanding, and even some all out wars unfortunately....but in the end this site is about boomboxes and respect.
All I'm sayin is you rubbed me the wrong way comin out guns blazin like you've been here awhile. And im only speaking for myself.
Its not a bad idea to get to know your audience before you grab the mic and start spittin.

i would say something but i was pretty ****ing annoying when i started out at stereo2go 10 years ago, i didn't know **** from shoe polish about forums and went in mouth running , bragging and just being all out stupid . i learned my lesson fast , just slow down and contribute something useful , least wise that way it's not all take and you give something back , if you don't wanna do that then you basically will fade away in time .

If I may, from a relative newcomer:

Did a bit of that myself at the start, then I read the etiquette portion for newbies and choked up on the bat a bit.

Agree with GZ also in that you are all about (seems so at least so far) what you like, and too much of 'Yeah that's nice, but this is better' , so understandably on some nerves.

First and foremost, you joined a site with the title/subtitle "Boomboxery: Making Classic Boomboxes Happy Again" so 'clean and simple' just might not cut it.

I can only hazard a guess that you are younger than these boxes, and tacky, gaudy or just plain over the top, they represent a time most of us grew up in and thus with these units. Personally Disco was not my bag, but I learned 'The Shuffle' cos that's where the babes were ! Every mod, every crazy paint job, takes us back a bit to those days when ostentatious ruled ! Disco Lights, Glam Rock, the beginnings of Hip Hop , Punk Rock. we were all different and this place brings all together in the mania these boxes inspire!

That's the respect ! Thus the ramblings and off-topic sideway hi-jacked threads in almost every post!

That's the fun!

I am stepping off soapbox now. And Remember those Derbys anyone? :-P

Oh, and you know the boys are serious when there is no Emoticons in their posts! :judge: :w00t:

I believe our esteemed members have said all that needs to be said here. As a mod I more often than not elected to see how a thread develops before I comment and this one has done quite well.

Funktoon, I would heed these wise words. Slow and steady is the way. And trust me 'bro, there are quite a few of us cats here that can really break down hip hop culture, boomboxes from a street cred to technical standpoint, and even tell you the who's who of manufacturer's.

You can have a lot of fun and get a lot of help here. Just remember, we share our opinions not so much based on taste or design alone, but on the enjoyment of "the culture" itself. I would recommend you read "The Boombox Project" by Lyle Owerko. I had not only the pleasure of getting his book but meeting the man himself. I can tell you, he may not think every boombox has "The Look", but he knows each owner has "The Passion". You stated you had a Yamaha PC-8 which is right up my alley. I primarily collect component systems. Doesn't mean that the item has nothing to do with you. It was your first boomer so should hold some meaning to you...just as others boomers hold meaning to our members.

Or that the culture means something to you...or is it just for t-shirts and profit? I'd like to think the former... ;-)

All that being said. I hope this forum works out well for you. The "family" only gets better with the addition of another good member. Id still like to see some ideas you have. Maybe photoshopped onto t-shirt pictures?

OK, now see, THAT is some TRULY harsh trolling, and is 100% personally directed AND 100% full of crap!

have i ONCE said "gimme! gimme! gimme!" in this thread after the initial post?! NO! if no one wants to offer pics, and no one has, that's fine. it was just an idea i thought maybe a few people would be interested in. i thought it was an idea people would be enthused about... getting free teeshirts with pics of their favorite boxes (i have to buy them from another printer as i thought i said. i don't have any gear of my own yet) and to help the rest of the community get better teeshirts than are currently available. WTF was i thinking?

as to "paying my dues", uh... have you not seen my contributions to the unusual boxes thread? i've put a couple hours worth of research into that to share, and i spent even longer going through the beats in my youtube channel to share here as that's something new i CAN contribute.

oh yeah, i spent the better part of an hour replying in the boomboxes and BMX thread telling a commenter about class D amps and how they can use them for bike systems, so before you go flaming on me, look at my posts and attempts to be helpful why don't you when YOU are talking like a hostile troll and making things personal.

as to my age, i'm STILL a REAL b-boy and call anything after 1987 new jack as REAL hip-hop culture is anti-gangster and saying you're "OG" is a sign you don't get it. i'm pre-G and was uprocking in clubs in 1983.

so, don't get on a high horse and talk about respect when you're spitting all over the place.

UNBELIEVABLE!

whenever i can, i go out of my way to help people, and i've donse so here, but uppities can something something my something.

if anyone wants to comment on how dumpy my bike system looked, go for it, but it sounded pretty good.
because unlike SOME, i am not a hypersensitive troll looking for any excuse to be offended

THIS was the first boombox i owned since 1983, i think
Yamaha_PC-8_---.jpg

so i was THERE when hip-hop was still a culture of positivity. when some troll i worked with went on a rag-a-thon about how his brother's box was bigger and put out 100wpc, a claim i still say was based on some specs exaggeration at 10% THD, or peak power, i just said "good for him, whatever" as i liked my box just fine and it really made good sounding tapes

OK.

Funktoon, I get where you're coming from. Misplaced words, misunderstood, etc.

Like the fact that your willing to give away free T-Shirts. That is cool in itself.

This thread has gone on long enough. Valid enough points and clarification from both sides.

Being the grown men we are...let's move on and get back to boom boxes.

All,

Should you elect to send photos, please do so via PM to Funktoon.
