I recall my brand new 931 (back in 1987) having a very good sound. Very energetic woofers when it came to bass and the tweeters were pretty clean. The case could've used abit more sealing in order to get better bass sound. All in all it was very good. I wish I held onto it. Dad sold it when I joined the ARMY :'-(

Best bass of any 1-piece box I've heard! If you cut back the bass frequency on the EQ, it can be a pretty good sounding box.

Assuming you mean the JVC RC-M70, the M70's bass is VERY weak in comparison to the 931, but it's better at everything else.

How does it compare with the JVC MC70?
One downfall to each is M70 has top mounted sliders that usually have issues and need rebuilding most of time where as TRC931 has a bad switch system for bands and function control that breaks  I love em both and all of mine thankfully are fully functioning

There about half a dozen variations of the 'original' TRC-931.
This is the first one and best sounding, according to members here:

This model is pretty hard to come by though. The later models (with the LED meter on the left hand side and different graphics) got cheaper and cheaper production runs, reducing their sound quality from what I've read.

If I had to choose between a TRC-931 and an M70 I'd take the 931 any day of the week. No contest from my perspective.

Rock On.

As you see personal preference plays a big role in boombox recommendations. If sound quality is the question here the M70 wins hands down. The overall clarity and clean sound of the M70 easily outshines the 931. The 931 does have stronger bass. If your musical preference is bass heavy music then the 931 might be for you. If musical clarity and build quality are more important then the M70 is best. Personally I have both and like different things about each. When compared side to side the 931 sounds a little muddy in comparison although if you adjust the eq properly you can get pretty good sound from the 931. The 931 also distorts more easily at higher volumes. The M70 stays strong and clear even at near max volume and is built like a tank. I must also mention that you have to be VERY careful when using the 931 controls, especially the function switch, it is plastic and not built very well. All in all I think every collector should have both as they are designed with different intentions and both do what they were designed to do. If I could only have one box I would choose the M70 hands down because it sounds good with any kind of music...that's why I have 5 of them... :-D

I would like an M70, but finding one in my budget range is difficult, The Lasonic seems a bit more affordable.
Yes but Lasonic in Shipping also breaks easily  Black boomers are not as sturdy ;-)

Thats true. Ive searched high and low in my area and I cannot find ANY decent boomboxes so Ebay is about the only option.

If eBay is the place you plan on getting the box from, the prices for both boxes run neck and neck, especially if the TRC-931 is in very good/great condition... I won two 1st edition TRC-931's from eBay for under $200.00 each a little over a year ago... 2nd edition versions sell for more money but are less rare...

Other than that, perhaps the type of music you listen to should determine what box you should go after... If you listen to a lot of Hip-Hop with deep 808 bass kicks, there's absolutely NO WAY I'd recommend buying an M70! For other music with no "BOOOOOOM BOOOOOM", go for the M70.

I would prefer an M70 to be honest. Mainly due to the better build quality and more balanced sound. I'd like a relatively sturdy box and the Lasonic seems a little on the cheap side. I have yet to see an m70 to go for under 300 on eBay recently. :sadno:

Sounds to me you've already made up your mind as to what it is you want... You want that M70, better get that cash right!

There isn't great bass in the 931 (think its 2nd ed) I have and the M70 is certainly on a par if not better for bass.
I think it is to do with the eq which I don't really like on a box. Therefore my opinion is the M70 sounds better.
