... arrived today. it's pretty rough.
after doing some reading on here i see the busted function switch is going to be an issue...

next step: see what works/doesn't work and take it apart

Good luck!

I have heard some people say you can still switch the function with a screwdriver if the knob is missing/broken off. :hmmm:

thx

I cracked it open and saw the function gear broken in two...
looks like a common problem and also a pain to get the part and likely as much a pain to affix back onto the board..

I looked at the metal housing of the function switch on the board and saw that the top 1/4 inch had nothing attached to it so i cut it to gain access to where the gear is supposed to go... anyone been down this road?
I'm thinking I can epoxy the gear back together and then epoxy it back on the shaft -- what I'm trying to figure out though is how to make sure the gear, selector, and knob are in sync so for example when the knob is set to RADIO, the selector is also on the radio..

... crude diagram below. any advice anyone has is much appreciated thx

other issues to address:
- loose power button (all screws and tab are there - just oddly loose.. maybe normal?)
- right speaker is quieter
- some light buzzing when touching the volume knob
- broken handle (chrome plastic part)

yes a sad design i wish they would have used a better made switch ,,u are still ok all u have to do is position it on radio untill u can find one which is almost nearly impossible ,,now sometime if u can get a 4 band switch from another lasonic i belive the trc-920t silver model has the sw bands that switch can be used as it the same size.. :-)

thx got the radio and cassette working by manually moving the selector - was fantastic to hear. and good times going through old boxes of tapes! I wished I used labels though...

.. there must be a thread on here for AWESOME found mix tapes...

Nice going, Law! Did you happen to take extra pics of the epoxy process? There are lots of other Lasonic owners who have the same problem with the selector switch.

By the way...

Welcome aboard!!

I have more pics/notes on the process and materials I used - will post...

-- a big test will be to see how the epoxy holds up -- it works but will never be as strong as a solid gear. To be safe I noted where the end-points of the gear synced with the knob indicator, making sure never to crank it past these 2 points...

nice to have it working though -- but I still have more to fix.. I'm testing out some plastic glues; on the handle (till i get another) and on broken screw-points on the case.

Just performed the repair you layed out in your photos on the function switch- mine isn't as neat as I used a die drinder to open the switch up, but it works again. It boils down to age and folks (wifey) twisting too hard and a gear that that is made of material that is too weak. They are bound to break if you keep applying pressure when it is against it's detents. Thanks for the great photos! :-) :-)
