I have to share this one with you since I'm seriously impressed by this Lasonic TRC-918 I found at Goodwill this last week. It's not perfect but overall it is fairly nice and sounds fantastic. It does have some chrom chipping off of the left tweeter grill and a few fins are broken, it's missing the tuner glass and has a broken Light switch. It's fully functional after De-Oxit however at Goodwill the radio was dead, that may be why it was still there when I showed up. This midsize boombox feels like it weighs more than the much larger 931.

This boomer is very much like the Sanyo 9994 in weight, sound quality and even some of the styling queues like the tuner glass that attaches with 4 screws from the front. The speaker grills and the controls also remind me of the 9994.

Wow! I would probably go into cardiac arrest if I ever saw one of those here in Tennessee. Good score, Don.

Very nice Don and the tuner glass doesn't appear to be that hard of a fix either. Great pick up!

Congratulations, MasterBlaster!

I've found those boxes interesting since finding out about 'em a few years ago...

Any idea how they compare to a TRC-920?

I believe that Lasonic "borrowed" most of their styling queues from Sanyo for it's boxes - including the LED tuning dial indicator they used for their later models. Lasonic took it a step further with the 2-tone red/yellow effect tho...

As for the weight, if the 918 is like the 920, it probably weighs about the same as a 931.

Perhaps this is a box I should have in my collection, even tho it has pretty understated looks for a Lasonic. :hmmm:

Love that Lasonic.
It's like their crossover box between sensible portable stereo and gaudy ghettoblaster.
Top score Don, really well played.

Rock On.

Johnny your right, the tuner glass is just like the Sanyo 9994. I could make my own out of a piece of plexi or any sheet of clear plastic, it attaches with four screws on the outside just like the 9994. We also have a custom plastic shop in town, I could take them a template and have one made but I'm sure it wouldn't be very cheap.

So far the 918 seems to be a very good box, it really compares to the Sanyo 9994 in a lot of ways. Like Ira said this is a great carry around box, it can really pump out some good sound. Since I've never had a 920 I can't compare it but I can tell you this is one heavily built box, not at all like the later boxes that are lightly built.

The 918 feels like one of the solid boxes built by one of the top manufacturers so I would have to agree that these must be the best they made quality wise. If the 920 is built like the 918 then I would welcome a 920 if I could ever get my hands on one for a good price.

I no longer have a 931 or 975 however from memory the 918 feels as heavy or even slightly heavier to me as well. Maybe it's an illusion because it's so much more compact than those big black boxes. :hmmm:

i dont think its an illusion theres almost no empty space in the 920 compact and solid.
