now that i remember mono there is a silver version of that 909 it has only am fm and no sw bands ,, but i thought i had a pic of it saved somewhere but i could not find it :-)

Yeh I have similar results from using a DIN cable on some units while on others it plays perfectly. I think it comes down to whether it has line level input or not on the stereo. Either way it is a pain in the ass.

I noticed that most boxes that use a DIN line-in - like one of the versions of the JVC RC-838 - are made for use in the UK... Probably explains why I couldn't find any DIN cables in the US. Are they still used on newer UK stereo equipment?

Not really no, I have a Kenwood high end seperate setup for my home audio, they are from the early 90's and none have any DIN input. i think a lot of DJ stuff has DIN in and outputs. I'm not overly convinced why any boomers have DIN other than they never provided a line level amp inside. Still, pain in the ass.
