FIRST IMPRESSIONS:
Feels very solidly built
Happy to see that it plays CD, Cassette, Am/Fm and MP3 CD's.
The strap is a joke. It's almost impossible to haul it around without smashing it into everything along the way. A handle would've allowed much better control in transit.
I didn't want to toss $20 worth of batteries on it since I'm sure it'll consume them like M&M's. The 52 watts need to come from someplace.
Almost has an industrial feel to it. Certainly is a box that I would prefer (over a classic) to haul with me to inclement locations.
The remote is a great feature, and the built in remote pouch on the strap is even better, without which it's almost a sure thing to be lost in short order.
Blends in with nothing that I have
Takes up a lot of real estate -- not stackable either.
Tuner: nothing special here. I personally prefer an analog system or at least a tuning knob. Hate up/down buttons.
Bass is good. Very mellow and low. However, not as tight as I'd like.
Volume is good, although the way Ira built this thing up, it's rather anticlimatic since it's not as loud as I'd expected it to be.
Looking at the smallish 3.5" (or so) drivers up front, it's clear that it won't get super loud. The side drivers are subwoofers only and don't reproduce the sound in the audio spectrum. Mind you, this doesn't mean that it's not loud -- just not as loud as I expected from 52 watts of power.
Tonal controls. Has preset sound settings but didn't seem to have the range of adjustability that I'd like to see. NO bass/treble/midrange controls. Also, the digital up/down buttons are functional but nothing like a nice set of knobs for quick, no-nonsense adjustment.
Distortion is higher than I'd like to see. If you listen carefully, there is going to be quite a bit of distortion. The sound quality is not as good as some of the better classic boomboxes. Looking at the specs, it's probably right. I see that at 20wpc, it's rated at something like 10% distortion. That's quite a bit. Clearly, this rig is not going to be replacing any of my home audio gear.
Overall sound quality. OK but not overly impressive. Some classic boxes don't get as loud but the sound clarity of the kaboom isn't where I'd like to see it. I'm pretty certain its due to the relatively small size of the front drivers.
OVERALL IMPRESSION: Good box for what I paid for it. Certainly, better sounding than almost every one of my $150 boxes. Volume can get loud but not as loud as I expected. Sound quality is hardly high-fidelity but for portable sound, is great. The best way to describe this is that its a CAR AUDIO system made to be portable. The interface is typical of what you'll find in modern portable equipment and the sound is very bassy but not the best choice for classical stuff. Bottom line -- Great Bang for you buck, might even be louder than most Grails, but sound quality and clarity isn't going to blow away the most discriminating and fussy listeners.
OK, just my very personalized impression. Your mileage may vary.
P.S. No petunias for Ira -- he gets a Venus Fly Trap!
