Absoloutely gorgeous Norm!!! I love it to bits!! Superb craftsmanship.

I look forward to a nice how-to for a modded dial light too, when you get up to it.

One thing, have you entertained the idea of different coloured speakers?

Can't wait to see more on this project, it's one of the best I've seen and is super inspiring!

Rock On.

...WOW...absolutely stunning!!...great job Norm.

You've got a stunner yourself there Melvin.

Glucifer: The speakers were mint -- no corrosion on the center caps, no stains, no fading and almost NO dust behind the grills. That's almost unheard of and I know that I'm the only one that opened this guy up. All indications are this is a little used unit. That being said, the only things you can do to the speakers (besides replacing them) is to make them lighter or darker. The original blue is already pretty dark and you can't really see that they're blue unless you look directly at the right angle anyhow. Then making them lighter like Melvin did would be interesting but I don't think the blue rings would contrast well with the maroon paint. In the end, if the speakers were not mint, I would've considered doing something. As it were, I decided to leave it and I think it looks well as it is. You can only do so much before it starts to look really busy.

Thanks everyone for all the kind comments. Kind of makes all the effort worthwhile now.

Ewen: I got lots of black or silver boomboxes. Blue is interesting but I had to choose one color. There is a story behind why I chose this color. My daughters have been part of the school music programs for like forever. 2 weeks ago, I watched my daughter's high school jazz band play in one of the seasonal concerts. In the center was the guitarist, on stage with all the incandescent stage spot lights blazing, all the brass and wood instruments sparkling in the lights. The ONE instrument that stood out completely was the electric guitar -- it was candy apple red, not unlike the one below. I knew at that point that our classics are indeed classics, but with no "real" modern boomboxes to replace them, at least certainly none of that quality, I felt compelled to develop the modern boombox equivalent of that candy apple red guitar. It's time for our boomboxes to grow with the times, and I wanted something that didn't just blend in -- rather stood out. On stage, with proper lighting, this boombox will be the center of attraction. Not just another boombox, this one is customized. It's mine. It's special.

A politician once said, you can please some of the people all the time, or all of the people some of the time. However, you can't please all of the people all of the time. This may be a love it or hate it color. But I did it for me and I love it. :-D

WOW really nice job!!!!
With all these mods going on we will have to start a "show your mod thread".
BTW how did you get the tuner dial lens off .

The tuner dial lens (the front one, not the back/internal one, is clipped on at the top two edges. There is no glue along the top edge, simply a mechanical catch. The bottom is glued on. If you stick a think putty knife at the top between the case and lens (I used 2, 1 on both left/right side of the lens, and rotate backwards, you can pop the lens off. To reinstall, simply catch the bottom of the lens (put a few dabs of contact cement first) and rotate up and around snapping it in place.

I have done this many times on others too. However, anytime you need to pry something off like this, you are always taking a risk so be forewarned -- do at your own risk!

That's very, very, VERY impressive work!!! :-O

Yeah, it ain't for everybody, but Plain Jane boxes are a dime a dozen. If anything, you've added value to that box and made it stand out from the crowd by making it look outstanding!

Can't wait to see the finished product!
