Before: Please don´t expect an luxury boombox!
You would be disappointed!

Some members will know my search about an tiny PHILIPS 170, my very first boombox of the 80´s.

It was only lent by a friend´s mother and i must give it back in the ending 80´s. :'-(

In 1994 i found on flea a very rampaged exemplar.
Tape dead (this s*it box is nearly impossible to rebelt...)
Parts missing....
I used it in my military time, then stored away.

Waiting for an better one.

A time ago i found this aka, a HORNYPHON in very good condition! :-)

Search goes on...

Then member "blinddarm" on s2go found for me a 170 on ebay and got it for me.
Was very happy.

But when the parcel arrived, big disappointment.
Box is a wreck inside.
Must have dropped bad, everything smashed inside.
Not worth a repair....
But dont get me wrong: absolute not normans fault!!

Then 2 weeks ago i was on the caritas flea.
A flea where things of residence cleanings get sold.
Most of died people or those who changes residence...

Look at the electronic storage:

Nothing special?

For sure special!!
The same color dirt was on my first one.
No idea what from it is,but i can´t believe there would be a 2nd box with exact the same color dirt inside.
:hmmm:
Fact: to 99,9% this IS my first boombox!!!!! :w00t: :smooch: :surf:

Maybe the most tiny, but wonderful find for me ever.
Had tears in my eyes.

Now the smashed box get parted, to make mine perfect.
And then the one of the military time.
The HORNYPHON will need no restauration.

That is incredible, Roman! What are the odds that you would find YOUR 170 after all these years? What a story! Just imagine all the stories that could be told by the little radio if it could only speak. ;-)

If that box could speak...

How does it came to this flea.
Hope the mother of my skoolfriend did´nt die... :sadno:
But most of those residence cleanings are out of this reason.
But maybe anybody else owned it between?!?

And i can´t believe there would be another 170 with this green color inside.
I remember i wanted to remove it that time ago, but then i thought: not my box, leave it as it is.
And it was good so! :agree:

Thanks boys!

More than finding a real "grail"
If i had found ANY 170 in maybe perfect condition > happy
finding MY 170 (with all rampages from a long using time) > total satisfaction :smooch:

Would love to hear the story of this little box.
And if i had no time to go to this flea it would have ended on dump (after storing 2 weeks there). :-/
Or anybody would have taken it for working area or so - goodbye forever... :'-(

Great story. Keep us posted on the restoration :-)

a very careful one.
The volumewheel is broken and aerial damaged.
Will take them off the ebay box.

But i will not kill history in a perfect restauration.
For sure the color point will survive!!!

And notice how simple this box is made!

Tuning wheel is direct mounted on the tuning-capacitor.
Tapedeck owns no pause function.
Also no eject, tapedoor must be moved by hand.
FF and REW does´nt lock!

_____________

The reason why i lent it from him, was not recording music.
We needed it for skool for language lessons.

Hm , to be honest , i less used it therefore.
Most time i recorded music. :-D

btw: i had no idea i can record direct music from the radio.
First i recorded over the mic from mothers transistor radio...

I don't think you should clean it up, much less restore it... leave it just like you found it and used it! Green dirt and broken tip and all!!

:agree: with you, spud.
But the broken volume knob will be glued/changed.
Because it owns also the power off function.
And so it is bad to turn.

The arial will get a little screw on the top, as i did that time ago.

No fear, no restauration overkill. :nonono:
