I'm sure many others will chime in on this but the M9994's I've seen on ebay always draw a lot of attention. M9998's don't seem to draw as much interest and it could be that it is a 1 piece box that looks like a 3 piece, or it could be that folks just aren't as familiar with them. There are a lot of 3 piece boxes of the 80's and 90's that have that same kind of look and go for really cheap. The M9998 is anything but, however the association, even if just visual, probably isn't good for improving value.

Yeah I think its the 3 piece look thats a small let down however there is no no no no no way in hell I will ever part with mine. Even if this recession does end up sending me out of business and my wife ,daughter, and myself on the street we are going to need some decent sounds as we huddle under that bridge for shelter :-/  :'-( :w00t:

Well, I for one think that the M9994 is worth every bit the difference in cost compared to the M9990. I have several examples of each and have worked extensively on both of them. The M9994 is definitely much better sounding, and WAY more powerful. Specs from service manuals: M9990 = 2.7wpc output power, M9994 = 7.0wpc output power. The M9994 also has a phono and auxillary line in function. The M9990 is sorely lacking this important feature. Analog tuning meter on the M9994 for signal strength sensitivity. LED tuning indicator for M9990. M9990 does have clock/timer, which M9994 does not but instead relies on standard sleep feature.

Electrical design: M9990 only has adjustments for Playback gain, Recording gain and meters.
M9994 has adjustments for Playback gain, Recording gain, meters, ALC and Bias adjustment. NO BIAS ADJUSTMENT is prescribed in the service manual for the M9990!!!

Also, this could become a very important adjustment: Tape playback speed. M9994 is adjustable to compensate. M9990 has no adjustment for tape speed.

Bottom Line: Both are good boxes, M9990 is plentiful and fairly cheap. M9994 is much rarer and very pricey but in my opinion, worth every penny!
Thanks for the info, Superduper! Very interesting, I didn't realise that the M9994 would be so much better than the M9990!

I have seen them compared frequently like the 9990 is just a newer 9994, probably because Size for M9994 just a little bigger and the 9990 shows some hints at more modern technology (clock). However, once you become intimitely familiar with them and work on them, you'll understand where the similarities end and the differences begin.

Also, when they were for sale way back when, the M9990 was targeted to consumers while the M9994 was advertsied as "Professional."

9994 is very simular to the 9998

Think I'm going to have to disagree with you there.

The 9998 has a music search feature, 9994 does not
9998 has dolby noise reduction feature, 9994 does not
9998 has loudness while 9994 has midrange controls unless 9994k, which also had loudness
9998 has quasi mechanical/solenoid activated cassette mechanism, 9994 is completely mechanical
9994 has timer/standby feature, 9998 does not.
Tuner circuitry is laid out differently and they use different multiplex decoders
Amplifier's use similar amps (9998 uses BA532) (9994 eary uses BA521, late models use BA532) but the circuitry is different.

There are similarities and reuse of some tried and true circuitry modules implemented into the design but no more so than any other box from same manufacturer.

Marketing wise: In 1979 brochure, the M9994 (and all other lower models) are listed under the Portable Stereo Cassette Recorder section while the M9996 and M9998 are marketed in the Portabel Music System catagory. The M9994 is the only one advertised as "professional", presumably for heavy duty continuous use.

added that imho :-)

the 9998 has alot better/deeper bass than the 9994 -
and an overall more solid quality sound -

other than the m90 and the 880 -- its the best sounding one piece box

yes but what i am talking is sound wise yes it does use the br532 and so does the 920 the 9975 the panny 7000 and some other ones but sound wise its very simular my 9994k has good bass just as good as my 9998 yes not everything would be the same there are always something added or deleted some new technology added music search and so on ,, so yes each box is unique and will not exacly be the same it would defeat the purpose if they would be the same but these 2 boxes are one of my favorites

Ok. Looks like we are all in agreement here.

Although Ira, I think you need to send your M9994 to me so I can service it for you and get it sounding the way it's supposed to.

Sounds like big fun. Big like in boom. Only problem is: pick two places in the U.S. about as far from each other as possible and you'll get an idea of the obstacle between me and the meet.
