Remember the recent JVC RC-M70 that sold for $1,500 on eBay? The seller for that auction, conion65, made nearly a 500% return on his original purchase.

Here is the auction where conion65 bought the M70 for $307 on March 27, 2011:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... &viewitem=

Here's a pic of the factory box from that auction:

Here is the auction where he sold it for $1,500 on April 15, 2011 (less than a month later):

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... MEWAX%3AIT

Here's a pic from conion65's auction:

sale2.jpg

Notice that the factory boxes are the exact same one in both auctions. That was the clue. Not too bad for only spending a little more than $300.

I bet if the original seller had taken more pictures and had a better description, he could have gotten much more money.

I'm not surprised! I'm not against free trade but I think I would feel awfully foolish if I were the one who bid on and won that M-70 for the price of a nice AMC Pacer. Replica boxes here I come!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I saw that it was the same one too that recently sold for 1/5 the price.

To each his own. Obviously not a collector, he just pretends to be and makes a living on them.

It would be interesting to get some manufacturer's statistics on how many of each model were built. Was the M70 one of the best-selling boomboxes? Is that why there's so many of them on Ebay? Or is it just because everyone says its so great, which drives demand for them?

In other words, is the reason why there are so many people looking for an M70, because they actually remember that specific model from their childhood, or is it just because people on boombox boards say they're so great?

Because I was alive back then, but I don't remember M70's at all  ...........but I do remember the Conions and Lasonics.

Not knocking them, just curious what motivates people.

I was thinking the same. IMO is a lot from the posts in the boards. Yea M70 is a great sounding and build box, but there is no way to have something with the look. I think from the lot of good words about M70 he build some star status and a lot of ressellers, some "investing" in any kind of stuff people are after M70. With this amount of money any collector can buy a few other better looking mint boxes. In my personal point of view the real price of M70 is equal with the other top midsized boxes. Not more not less. Yea it is great sounding but is not great looker tough. Its pointless IMO to spend twice or more of the price of any other midsized box. At the end we should admit that the boomboxes are not the best sounding equipment and to pay this amount of money just for some tiny extra bass kick and foggy grail status is insane. Anyway some times if we want something so much we can afford to pay insane cash. But M70 is not in the red book of the missing kind... Its fairly common box. There is no way for me that im goin to pay double of the price of the 9595, Sencor S4800 or any other equal box. Its a little bit like Hollywood status ;-) . No thanks. There are thousands of "not grail status" great boxes with right price waiting to be discovered  . So i prefer to have some of them till waiting for normally priced M70  .
For me the boomboxes came from the underground movement and they should stay away of the "star status" and insane rich posh boys "collectors" item.

I would never "let" her spend money like that on a M70. That's foolish. Especially since this posting had so many red flags...

The only way to judge their sound is to hear one. I'm personally blown away by their sound. I have pretty decent home audio recording studio and have studied sound engineering. M70s are known for sounding GREAT even outside this forum. But.. It's subjective...

Very interesting thread! I personally own two M70's...one mint without original box, original manual and sticker on the door, and one thats got some battle scars, but fully functional, other than the dial light is blown, and I am totally floored by the sound reproduction of the M70. The tape deck is one the best around and rivals many home decks for wow/flutter specs, speed correctness, etc. There is no comparison to any other manufacturer that can rival this radio for the sound, power, build quality, and looks, in the same basic size as an M70. I love the look of the M70! When I think of the standard boombox shape, look, and features, I think M70. When I think of the standard look of a turntable...I think Technics SL-1200! Industry Standard for sure! There are so many around after 30 plus years because they are built like tanks and are quality, hence the prices they were asking for a brand new one in 1980-81. I could never afford one of these in the early 80's, since I was in my early-mid teens, so I saved my money and bought my first boombox in 1982....a Panasonic RX-5085. A very nice radio, but no M70. Its all about who has the funds to splurge on such fine piece of boombox history. Ridiculus yes, but thats why theres ebay, and why there are buyers and sellers.

I personally think the M70 falls outside the classic look.

First, it's got horn tweeters, which isn't the norm. The "classic" look is 4 individual round grills.

Second, it doesn't have any knobs or toggle switches......it's all sliders. And they're all on top.....There aren't any controls on the front at all.

I would say that something like an RX-5500 or Bombeat 40 is a better representation of the "classic" style. (I am not saying "better", I'm just saying "classic").

Reli, I think Matrixambience is talking about 'classic' from the standpoint of the M70 having 2 woofers and 2 tweeters with a cassette deck in the center and a tuner up top. The color of the speakers shouldn't matter. That would be like saying a Lasonic 931 isn't 'classic' because its woofers are white. And the style of the tweeters shouldn't matter either. They have to be round? What about the Conion C100 and the JVC M90? They have square/rectangular tweeters. So, they're not 'classic'?

Stormsven, the M70 is a legend. Period. Sure, it's a boombox just like any other. Sure, it's in the same category as a Sharp 9595 or Sencor 4800. But, the M70 kicks both those boxes up and down the street. They're not equal. Renault makes cars that are the same size as a BMW. They're not equal. You pay more money for a BMW so you have the ability to out-perform the cheapo Renault.

This is a great evolving thread. Over the last year I have been following many M70 threads. JVC's alway's get the biggest THUMBS UP on quality, but this M70 never gets bad words said.

In the last few months since following Holly's threads which are all filled with great comments from members it has me wondering....

Is the M70 the best Mid Sized radio ever? I don't personally have one, nor have I ever heard or seen one in person. Just wondering what else stands up to it?

I Am Legend
bad thing ??

sort of bad for thems that like to play music a quiet volumes -
and still hear//feel some bass

the m70 suks at that -
even at full bass with the loudness on-- :nonono:

the lasonic 918 or 920 wipe it at low volumes-
most good midsize boxes have much better bass output than the m70
until the m70 is cranked up

so --its way down on my list of boxes that i USE -
and i would never want to own more than one
