Other than the Japanese lettering, 100v power requirement and 90 MHz maximum for FM (on some models), there isn't much difference.

My similar sized Toshiba BomBeat RT-9990 puts the M70 to shame when it comes to bass and overall sound.

After finally owning an M70, I don't see what the big deal is... Probably blow the 9990 away in a battle of loudness tho.
:agree: 100% whit Mono. Deleted one of my posts here just not to keep the flame growing. I have no KINGs and Quins. . And will say it one more time - jvc rv-dp200 was close to the perfect box IMHO , but still no splash and shock proof  . So still in Hunt and wait for the Ultimate.Which is the best part in our hobby. Cant see the reason to be given some crowns to something. There are different people all around the world whit different POV and tastes. The mainstream demand and insane prices not making something better . The real things were born in the underground and is better to stay there. All other is Bollywood  . JVC is one of the best manufacturers, but just one from many...... And we didnt listened a lot LL here in Europe. We were boomin mostly old electro . The KLF burned a million quid...... And thats was against givin the crowns and titles. And boomboxes are the white pigeons of freedom for me. Not the royalty.....

For Pete's sake... just give it to the

JVC!
Besides that, my avatar wouldn't look half as cool if you substituted it for a Conion, Lasonic, or anything but a M90.
:-) :-) :-) :-) :-)
Gotta respectfully disagree with you on the "Coolness" factor for your avatar (which I dig, BTW) but I think the the Conion C100F would look better to be holding. Sorry for going off topic. Okay, back to business...... :-D :-D

If the boomer gets too colorful/decorated then no one will pay any attention to ME, though.

JVC M70 speakers are made by Panasonic........so......Panasonic is and always will be super king!

Even IF that's true, there are MANY other things involved, as you well know. Otherwise Panasonic would have made their midsize boxes sound as good.

Panasonic DOES NOT MEASURE UP!!!!

There are AMPS, EQing, quality construction, Sweetness, awesomeness that a Panny can't match... sorry... NO GO. Like I said before.... If a panasonic was so awesome, why didn't they make a comparable M70 box in sales, box re-sales, survivorbility (yeah, I made that word up), and popularity... and continued popularity.

JVC IS KING/QUEEN!!!!

Ummmm.....

Let me see....

Hmmm.... :hmmm: :hmmm: :hmmm:

Still Thinking....

HELL NO!!!

If I had to choose one or the other, money not considered, it would be my M70 hands down.

If I knew I would never have a chance to get a M90 and I had to choose between my discolite and a M90, I would choose the M90.

So.... now you all know my soul here...

JVC WINS!!!!

Observation

When people talk of JVC they speak of M-70, M-90, Kabooms and the PC series.

Now when people talk of Panasonic/National/Technics the stable is so much bigger
Rx-c100, Rx-c300, Rx-7XXX, Rx5xxx, Rx-a2, Rx-c4/5/6 series, the later Rx-ct and the cobra tops, add to this the technics boxes and the ultra rarities such as Rx-7700 and my National Rx-XE550

To me people are blinded by the M- series from JVC and don't think of so many other gems from the other brands.

JVC also used a distributor in Au, we never had the M-90 and back then the M-70 would have been big $$AU so are less common here, I have seen so many more sanyo's, aiwa's and national boxes here. (Australia used the National branding)

Second to this, Panasonic is as big or bigger than ever but JVC and Kenwood had to merge to survive a couple of years ago.

To sum up my thought, a king rules over all, small boxes, mid boxes, large boxes and component boxes. To me JVC does not fit this criteria and Panasonic does.

If we just talk of price and desirability in todays market i say the Discolite boxes. These were cheap light weight boxes that sell for much more than they deserve in todays market

Just my thought

Just my thought

If Vela sold nearly as many units and stood the test of time, they might be able to compete. The high prices on those are simply Madonna PR and rarity mainly due to low sales and low quality (lovely, fun and colorful) components.

Love my disco, but JVC TOTALLY KILLS VELA.

JVC merging nowadays being part of this debate?

Why not bring in the modern boomboxes then?

Bose would probably win in that case!

P.S. They were

IDIOTS

to not sell the M90 in Oz.

The only reason there is so many M-70's and 90's out there is that they were a second Hi Fi system for people, a lot of them never left the house after purchase. This can be judged by the number of decent models that show up, I am sure there was many more discolites (not just vela) sold, but they were used as portable devices and outdoors which when coupled with the cheap build they didn't last as long. Cheaper item tend to be thrown away once they don't work, even for failed belts or a fuse , the more expensive boxes tended to be put away once they didn't work and pulled out once ebay came along.

If you take into account worldwide sales, Sharp would have to be up there. In Au the VZ-2000 (rare not to see one on ebay.au) or Pioneer Disco Robo are the most common boxes, M-70's show up very rarely in oz.
Does this mean the VZ-2000 is the king in AU? It is rare to see one that does not work after belts have been changed, Vz-2000's also attract reasonable prices in Au, so is the VZ & Sharp Australia's M-70 & JVC due to sales volume and working examples? Sharp only stopped making portable stereos a couple of years ago.

This is a non model-centric view from outside the US.

King of variety - Philips
King of quality - Panasonic/National/Technics & Sanyo
King of Mech's - Aiwa
King of sound quality - subjective, I myself lean toward the Hi Fi quality of the RX-7XXX boxes.

As for newer boxes, we will have to wait and see who has a functioning box in twenty to thirty years to be fare.

On the M-90 in Au, there was a lot of restrictions on importing electronics into Au back then(protecting local industry) add the taxes and I don't think anyone would have been able to afford it here. This is also why Pioneer, Panasonic, Sony, Sharp etc setup a local operation in oz.

Holly ,i disagree whit you on this JVC crown stuff ,but yes, you need one kaboom. And Ira is trying to trick you. Ask him to give you one of his Jvc Rv-Dp200 "non full size" kabooms. Those are the best  . Kickin the butt of the big brothers  Best amp, best sound, best features, best looker  ....... And probably the rarest one too. Go for it.
