Hi All,

Just wanted to pop in for a quick howdy. I found a Sharp GF-9292 at a yard sale a couple of weeks ago. Finally took it apart and cleaned it yesterday. I ordered belts and the new capstan roller so I'll get the cassette deck working soon. It sounds great, and looks pretty good too! I'm pretty excited to have it.

Take care,

Ed

These are one of the best looking Sharps.
Did you manage to get behind the speakers grills and clean it?
Not yet. But the speakers are very easy to get out. I had it mostly broken down yesterday. I concentrated mostly on cleaning pots and switches to get it working well. I'll do more cosmetic cleaning when I have it apart again to do the cassette deck maintenance. It's a great stereo to work on! Very easy to break down. Everything plugs in and unscrews easily. Much easier than a lot of vintage receivers.

The picture above was actually the day I brought it home. This is how far I got yesterday. But it was so easy I put it all back together so I could enjoy it while I'm waiting for parts. I shot a short video of it yesterday afternoon. I'll post it on youtube and post a link.

This is it yesterday afternoon, cleaned and working well. You may see in the first pic above one of the sliders for the recording level is bent. I did manage to get it straight with two pair of needle nose pliers. I really hate bending those things. Always afraid something will snap off. But this one went well. You can see it now straight in the video.

That's a nice looking box. Love those huge dust caps on the speakers. They look mean :-) and the front Inputs are a unique option. Makes it easy to connect devices

also...its nice to know I'm not the only one to use the kitchen counter as a workbench..lol

I've always liked the looks of these, especially the trim rings around the woofers, great score, and welcome to Boomboxery

Thanks everyone!

I can't believe I didn't think of it right away, but I also have a Sharp RP-117. It's a really neat turntable with a sliding drawer. It plays both sides of the record without turning it over! And it has optical sensors that can see the spaces between songs. So it can skip to the next track!

I got it out and hooked it up to the 9292. It worked for a minute, but then the belt fell off. Honestly I don't know how it worked at all. The belt is super stretched. I just ordered a new one. It will be great to have these two bits of Sharp technology working together! What a fun little set up.

Nice score, yep, like others have said, love the looks, great sounding box and good carry around size. I hope you get the deck dialed in and welcome to the forum.

So, what's your next box gonna be?

lol Funny you should ask!

To be honest, while this is the first one I've gotten, I have thought about it many times before. I am seriously into stereo gear and have collected a lot over the years, particularly Acoustic Research speakers. I have a hot rodded pair of AR3s that are pretty much AR11s now. I have a pair of AR LST2s that are super cool. And I finally got my "holy grail" speakers a few years ago, a pair of AR9s.

I'm 49 years old, so I was a teenager in the 80s. I had a Panasonic boombox of some kind when I was young. Loved that thing. So I did want some cool boxes back in the day and have looked several times since I realized they were becoming collectible. So, what's next? I'm not sure I'll buy more, but it would be nice to have a big one. And if I'm going to get a big one, a Lasonic TRC-931 or a Promax Super Jumbo would be really neat. I did see a few broken 931s selling for decent prices. Maybe get a couple and try to piece together a nice one. We'll see. I'm fairly handy with this stuff, so that would be a neat way to go.

Congrats on finding a nice 9292 - I especially like the real steel mesh tweeter grills - quality stuff.

When you do the deck, don't forget to replace the 5mm tubing to get the playback working right.

Good luck with the service.

James.... :-)

Lovely box the 9191 and the 9292, classic killer looks and a nice feel to the controls. As Jimmy said replacing the capstan sleeve is important, if it hasn't gone already it soon will, its an easy job to do while its all open to.

Congrats on a great box. Its addictive mind

A man with a plan!

Well, you've come to the right place to make that happen. The typical weakness in the 931 is the gear in the selector switch breaks, so if your going to buy a few to piece together, make sure at least one has a good function switch. Also, there are a few different lower cassette deck keys/buttons. So if you get a few boxes missing keys, make sure the keys are all the same so you can swap them in.

That's a really nice Sharp - Love the LED meters as opposed to the needle meters :-)

So easy to work on & design very good for servicing..............Post a vid of tape deck restored when you have finished it

Hi Everyone,

I've been reading some threads and enjoying all the Boombox chat.

Just a quick update on my Sharp. I got the belt, pinch roller, and capstan kit on eBay. The repair went well and was so easy with so much documentation for this thing! There are YouTube videos that are super detailed. Just watch and follow along. This is a job almost anyone could do.

The cassette deck seems to be working well, at least mechanically, but I can't play tapes just yet. There is a kind of howl from one channel, and very low music from the other. Could be a combination of problems. Even when listening to the radio, when I power it down there is a bit of that howl for a second. I suspect there are some caps that are past it. I'm going to take a close look for leaking caps.

I wish I had more time to spend working on it, but I'll get there a piece at a time. I did get some proper antennas for it. They're for a 9191, but practically identical, and much better than the mis-matched junk that was on it. In the mean time, really enjoying using the stereo, and a good FM Modulator I have. And I did get my "both sides" turntable fixed and have been playing some records through the Boombox. Really fun stuff!

I'm going to keep at it. I'd really like to have this thing completely working as intended again.
