Just saying hello.
found this forum after a sudden desire to buy an old Skool boombox lol.
im looking for one to go in the studio to check my work on so sound is obviously very important.
im a huge fan of JVC and Sharp but open to ideas from other manufacturers.
doesnt have to be the biggest thing but must sound good.
any ideas where to start please?
you never know it might be the start of something .. hah!

Maybe there are UK members that can point you to good AKAs (Devices with different Company name and design but same interior as thought after boxes from JVC, Sharp, Sanyo etc.) That way you get good quality and good sound for less money.

Depending on the music you make / listen to: Sharp sounds good but is in most cases bass shy. They sound good but the bass lacks some punch. That is at least my experience.

I would steer clear of boomboxes with too many slider controls because those are always a pain in the ass. There are many more boxes that are great performing even some off brands that aren't even listed those are just some of the higher quality models.

If you’re uk and just want one with good sound I’d go M70…some like Lasonics will cost you a fortune to import these days sadly. The Sharp GF9090 is a really nice smaller box that’s generally easy to fix but it won’t blow you away sound-wise. Common in the UK tho so a lot easier to find. Sharps were sold in abundance here. I love the GF9191 but again it won’t blow you away. Depends how important the sound is compared to cost/available

Well if you’ve got deep pockets the M90 is better but not worth the price differential as they go for stupid money if you can find one. I’d go M70 as you can get a decent one for £200 to £300. Gone are the days when you can pick them up for £30 and £50 like my two lol

Yes there are. But I find that there’s always something wrong and I’m not skilled enough to repair them yet. Like I say, I’m hoping for someone to offer one for sale when I can get into the for sale forum.

Yep and there's always going to be something wrong with it unless you pay silly money for one that's perfect condition or pay silly money to have somebody work on it for you.

The "disappointing bass" Sharps include the 515, 525, 575, 9000, 9494, 9595, 9797.
IMHO at least.
The 777 series all have good bass, and so does the 9696 since it uses the same amp. Even the "lowly" 9191/9292 has good bass for its size, considering how old it is (1978). In fact it was one of the first boxes to actually have any bass.
