Hello everyone , glad to find this group.

I never realized what a prized boombox I had until I came here !

For history , I bought it during my first year of college for ..... I actually forget but I do remember that it was the single biggest purchase that year and it must have been in ...1982/3 .

I was so so proud of it ..... it's still embarrassing to remember how I told my roommate to ''always make sure the volume is down before you press play'' ( I think I was worried about blowing the speakers .... a common thing back then) . I had two external speakers hooked up to it but I remember that the best sound was sitting right in front of the box when it was going 100% ( deep ?.... deer ?.... ohhhh no I'm not deaf at all !!)

Anyway ....I've managed to keep the 'beast' over the years , moves , poverty (thank goodness I never sank that low to sell it) and now I have found a place where I can re-live its glory.

:-)

One slight problem with mine and I have 'searched' this forum but found nothing yet.
My Function Switch seems to be loose.
Moving from Tape to Radio I have to jiggle and hold the Function Switch but it will not ''catch''? or make contact ? I actually put a little toothpick type wedge in the gap to hold it to Radio function.
I've done a search looking for advice but if anyone can help it would be gratefully appreciated.

Thanks again for hosting this group.

Welcome aboard, Sarratt and thanks for sharing those great memories with us. I agree with Rimmer that you might be able to fix the function switch with some DeOxit or other contact cleaner. Maybe others who own the M70 can offer better or more specific advice.

Do you have a picture of your M70? :-)

Welcome!!!

The M70 is a favorite for sure.

Good luck with the deoxit... it has worked wonders for me in the past!

Welcome. I agree. Good News and Bad News. Deoxit is the fix, BUT the boombox needs to be disassembed in order to properly apply the deoxit. The Function switch you see is externally just a lever. The actual switch is some 6-7 inches further below and off to the left and behind the Printed Circuit Board, and you wouldn't be able to externally apply the deoxit solution without literally drowning everything in it.

Yes SuperDuper I have taken it apart once thinking in would be simple but its not ----- I know what you mean about not being externally unavailable.
But is it just that ? that detoxit will cure ?.......... It almost feels like something physical inside there is not making contact or is that me ?

again thanks

Your problem sure sounds like oxidation. Over time, switch contact surfaces begin to oxidize and the oxidation layer is not conductive. The result is that the switch contacts are unable to produce a good electrical connection.

Application of a good deoxidizing solvent and some mechanical friction will usually remove enough corrossion and oxidation to restore acceptable performance.

If you feel that there is something mechanically wrong with your switch, then that is bad news indeed due to the inavailability of parts. If your M70 is in good cosmetic condition, then it might be worthwhile to spend the money and buy a parts box to replace either that switch, or the mainboard wherein that switch is installed. Let me know if you think that is the case -- I might be able to help you find one.

Thanks a lot for the greetings ....I don't have the box nor the strap  I never did have the strap tho.

To SuperDooper: I think it may be a physical thing with my selector because it wiggles. But then again it always wiggled somewhat but now its worse.

It is worse when I am on ''radio''..... does that make any sense or give you a clue as to the problem ?

I've opened an Image view account to show you ....I hope I do this correctly. :-)

Yes its in pretty much mint condition .... never taken outdoors It's just very dusty and sad to say some nicotine(smoke) stains. (unless thats just the plastic yellowing? )

What exactly is a 'good deoxidizing solvent '' I googled the phrase and .....baffled.

again thanks

Cool! Your M70 appears to be in really good cosmetic condition.

...Yup , not a dent nor a scratch ........ I think because it was my first 'real' purchase I have taken care of it over the years.

I just tried it again and wow !!! I think the main feature is the concentration of sound !!!.... Thru brick walls I hear the thump ...lol
ahhh memories
