Hello everyone, having just acquired a well used Toshiba RT-8097 from a mate I have already been bitten by the restoration bug !!

I've had a passing interest in boomboxes in recent months so when my mate was 'going to skip it', I jumped in and offered the Tosh a new home. I'm an IT Engineer by trade and avid digital photographer so I'm looking forward to adding some new skills by taking on a cleanup and mile restoration job.

I've added some pics just as the machine sits right now, I'd be really grateful for any tips on cleaning up the plastics, whether to clean with the shell on or strip it first, just general hints and tips to get me going. Cheers all !!

Welcome to the forum! If it's all working just do an external clean. If it needs any repair/service at all then I'd strip it and bath the casing as its the best way to get it properly clean...but then I'm a bit obsessed with boombox cleanliness lol

Thanks mate, seems to work (FM Stereo tested ok but tape / CD to follow). I'll go with external clean initially. Where abouts are you from - I'm a son of Wakefield, currently living in sunny New Zealand :-)

The DBSS seems to be working from the right speaker only - the 'normal' speakers are both good - anyone familiar with how the DBSS works on these ? Are there bass drivers in the detachable unit ? Cheers.

Hmm, edit - seem to be one 10cm bass driver from what I can gather. Interesting.

Welcome to Boomboxery Mark :hi: Looks better after the wipedown, I like to get in all the cracks and crevices so I usually tear em down a bit and get in there really good. Im much like Northerner and just have to have all of my boomers CLEEEAN

Hello and a warm welcome to the Boomboxery forum, markoneswift! :hi:

I've noticed the white dots on the box, if these are white paint spots, you my be able to remove these with the gentle application of a thumbnail - this works for me. Good luck with the resto, you've something interesting to start with.

Welcome to the group, nice Tosh you got there, i love Toshiba boomboxes  If i was you, i would have taken it to bits and bobs and cleaned it also inside as i´m curious to see what´s inside.I´ve seen boxes that are nice outside but quite horrid inside. Congrats ! ;-)

Yup, spent many an hour pickin' away (with help of some "cheer') of course . Plastic's not too bad to get off from with a nail, and if stubborn, then the Goo-gone comes out.

Like the styling on this .

The CD works fine so I just need to acquire some tapes to try the deck. The only thing that wasn't quite right after reassembly was the volume - I missed the slider position. Got all the other top sliders aligned perfect except for that one. When I turned it on to test it, it ran at full volume........

Oh and there was a dodgy connection on the DBSS output at the back which was making the unit go 'wooow wooow' over and over. Cleaned the contacts are we're all good again. Gonna get my Sony MD going through the line for a laugh....

It's looking much better after a bit of TLC, it also looks quite easy to work on once opened up. Well done!

Wow it looks great :w00t: Are belts fine ? All Toshibas that have reached to me have had disintegrated belts, all 3 of them :-D

Nice work i must admit
